We’ve had one for 26 years. Bought it from a door to door saleswoman. We were kinda “partying” at the time so it was fun and entertaining. The next day we were like……. We paid HOW MUCH for a vacuum?! 😂🤣 Still runs like a champ.

Exactly. Kirby really solved the problem so well that companies had to stop making them this solid. Ours is 26 years strong and still a tank.

Kirby owners in the replies proving the point still running after 20–30 years and outliving the carpets. The ultimate ‘buy once, cry never’ product. Companies hate this one simple trick.

Facts. My parents still have their Kirby from the 90s and it runs better than half the new vacuums people buy every 3 years. Companies really do hate this one simple trick

Company still exists, and sales people see a Kirby owner as a lay down to sell the new one. One time I upgraded one less than a year old. People hate being sold, but love buying stuff.

And here's what SHOULD have happened. A company that produces a generational product should use that kind of legacy word of mouth to sell OTHER products. A shaver, waterpik, skateboard wheels, hairdryer, juicer, all designed with a forever-build. Make quality products instead of disposable ones.

They didn’t get customers cause they were 3k a piece had finance plans when it’s 60 dollar ones out there . True story worked for them as a salesman as a teen doing showings to expensive they not discontinued though still can buy one off they site

Bought our Kirby Sentria in 2008 and it came with every attachment you could think of, even a sanding feature. The vacuum itself is the most powerful I’ve ever seen as it literally will pull the carpet up from the floor while cleaning but the most valuable feature is the carpet cleaning attachment. No cleaner works like that one. Simply no way I would ever use another vacuum as we have never had an issue with anything except the auto drive which was fixed in a few minutes with a new one.

I don't think they problem was that they were too good. The problem was distribution. if they would have put them in stores where anyone could pick one up, they would have done a lot better than paying huge markup to cover the overpriced door to door salesman.

I have a Kirby that's 30 years old, and it'll suck the white off rice. The biggest complaint is that it's hard to push because it's heavy. It's hard to push because the suction is so strong; it's designed to lift the carpet off the ground by 1/4 inch. They've always done that. The 3rd generation, introduced in 1988, is self-propelled and very easy to push. The only difference between the 1988 model and the new ones is the shape and color of the plastic. Same core tech that hasn't changed in over 100 years. Used ones are dirt cheap.

Actually have one in the garage right now, got it for free from a guy who was throwing it out because he had just installed hardwood floors. Still works 100%.

That’s bullshit. I had a Kirby. Yes, it worked well. But no one ever wanted to use it because it was so goddamn heavy. We hated trying to remove the main head just to replace the belt that constantly broke. It was a major pain in the ass to take off and put back on. I paid almost $3,000 for mine. My neighbor, who bought the exact same model from the exact same salesman, only paid $1,400. I spent three long years paying that thing off. It was obscenely loud, the belt always needed replacing, and the head was a bitch to remove for belt changes or attachments. Anyone who’s owned a Kirby knows turning that logoed handle on the head required superhuman strength. I remember coming home from work some days and finding the vacuum sitting unused on the kitchen floor because my girl couldn’t get the head off to use the attachments… or couldn’t get it back on. I replaced it with a $60 vacuum that I still use to this day. When I moved I gave the Kirby to a neighbor. He almost didn’t take it. His wife had to push him: “But it’s a Kirby—take it!” They don’t use it either.

It costs 10x what a decent Dyson costs. If a $250 vacuum lasts me 5-10 years, it isn't intelligent for me to buy a $2500 vacuum that will last 25-50. Especially with the way motor and battery tech is going. Most vacuums will be cordless in the next decade, but Kirby owners will be stuck with old tech.

Kirby went out of business because they were so darn expensive in relation to consumer habits changed such that people don't want to pay $500+ for a vacuum when they can get one for $150. It's a matter of short-term spending vs long-term savings. People don't think long-term.
