As German industrial companies continue to place new factories outside of the country, several of these nuclear plants sit ready to return to operation. During the worst days of the energy crisis, Habeck and his officials claimed the plants couldn't be continued. International experts, plenty of them here, also incorrectly claimed the plants couldn't keep running. It is helpful to have Habeck's explicit confirmation ahead of the parliamentary committee of inquiry looking into the decision to continue nuclear closures despite the low of Russian pipeline gas, which seriously damaged German industrial competitiveness.

It may only have to outlast its European funding. Russia analyst Jamison Firestone argues there are now two wars running simultaneously. The first is military. Russia continues grinding against Ukraine’s defensive lines while preparing, in Firestone’s view, for another major mobilization. He estimates Moscow would need roughly another 760,000 troops to sustain another 18 months of fighting. But the second war is political. Firestone believes Putin is betting that European governments could change before Russia runs out of time. Germany is particularly important. If political power shifts far enough to the right and German funding for Ukraine dries up, Firestone argues the consequences could be decisive. “If the government in Germany changes and the money stops, right? That’s it. They’ve won.” That helps explain why frozen Russian assets are suddenly back at the center of the debate. Ukraine has announced a $27 billion budget hole, while Europe is facing decisions about how to finance the war beyond the money already committed. In 2020, after a Free Democrat politician won the premiership of Thuringia with AfD and CDU votes, Chancellor Angela Merkel called the vote “unforgivable” and said the result “must be reversed.” The winner resigned within two days, and Germany’s Constitutional Court later ruled that Merkel’s demand had violated the AfD’s right to equal competition. “The voters of the AfD have waited for this for a very long time,” Voss said, and the party “overperformed a little bit, like 1 or 2%.” The party took 43.8% of the vote, more than double the 20.8% it won in 2021, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU fell to 17.2%. I think this is extremely crazy I want to be super clear. My opinion is Germany should not only not shut down the nuclear power plants, it should reopen the ones that shut down. Those are the fastest ones to restart. It's crazy to shut down nuclear power plants Especially if you're in a place where there are no natural disasters. If you're somewhere with severe earthquakes or tsunamis, it's more of a question mark But if there's not a massive natural disaster risk which Germany does not have then there's really no danger with the nuclear power plants

Sunkara says AOC could fill the role, but only if she maintains “distance and confrontation” with the Democratic Party and presents herself as an outsider. The U.S. is almost certainly the cleanest shirt in the laundry because it produces enormous amounts of oil and gas while the economies most dependent on Hormuz are overwhelmingly in Asia. But cleanest does not mean clean. Even in an extreme scenario where a prolonged energy and financial shock contributed to something approaching Great Depression scale economic damage, the U.S. could still emerge relatively stronger if its principal competitors suffered even greater destruction to their energy security, industrial capacity, financial systems and ability to project power. American households and businesses would suffer enormously, but U.S. energy production, food security, geography, capital markets and control over dollar liquidity provide shock absorbers many competitors simply do not possess. And that is the uncomfortable geopolitical question I keep coming back to. Great powers do not necessarily optimize for avoiding every domestic recession if policymakers believe the alternative is losing their position in the international order. If Washington concluded that a severe but survivable contraction at home would permanently weaken China more, fracture competing resource networks and leave the U.S. controlling a larger relative share of global financial, technological and energy power afterward, would it tolerate extraordinary domestic economic pain to preserve American primacy? I am not saying that is demonstrably the strategy. But in a genuine great power struggle, the relevant calculation may eventually become relative survivability rather than absolute prosperity.
