Proud to see Oklahoma recognized for leading the way on common-sense education policy! Kids need time to be kids. That’s why I signed a law doubling daily recess for Oklahoma elementary students from 20 minutes to 40 minutes. It’s a simple change that will help students thrive in the classroom.

That's barely enough to get outside. Incarcerated folks sometimes get more fresh air than our kids. Let them go freestyle. No phones. Tag, monkey bars, real play, especially for boys who need to move. Bring back social development over screens and rows. Obesity up, attention down, social skills tanking? This is part of the fix. More states should follow Oklahoma's lead, back to basics! What do you think — more recess or keep shortening it?

Why is there a push to close Chicago Public Schools on May 1? According to the Illinois State Board of Education, only 1 in 3 CPS elementary students are proficient in reading and only 1 in 5 are proficient in math. Our kids need more time in the classroom, not less, yet Chicago parents are being asked for their kids to lose another day of school on May 1st for a political Day of Action. Parents and kids rely on schools for learning and consistency. Closing schools will send parents scrambling for babysitters or losing wages to stay home to care for their kids. For some kids, schools are where they get their meals and are the safest place they’ll be that day. As a CPS mom, I have skin in the game and expect my son to be in school where he belongs on May 1st. Keep Chicago’s students in the classroom, parents at work, and focus on the city’s test scores, not its politics. #chicago

PLAYTIME PAYOFF: Kids need daily recess and outdoor play for healthy physical and cognitive development, and the benefits are showing up in the classroom. Founders of 'Say Yes to Recess' show how expanding daily play in Tennessee elementary schools is paying off, with state TCAP test scores hitting a 10-year high: "We were able to be successful in making it go from 15 minutes to 40 minutes. And we realized, now that it's been a year, the TCAP scores, the standardized test scores, not only didn't go down, which was the fear, but they went up, and they're now the highest they've been in 10 years. So it was a positive effect."

For decades, teachers have spent their own money, and parents have been asked to pitch in, to help purchase materials for classrooms. Our government is changing that. Starting this September, every eligible elementary teacher will have direct access to $750 for classroom purchases. And that’s on top of the classroom supplies funding school boards continue to receive, about $32,000 a year for a typical 500-student elementary school. The bottom line: we’re putting more resources directly into the hands of teachers, so they have what they need to support students in the classroom.

For decades, teachers have spent their own money, and parents have been asked to pitch in, to help purchase materials for classrooms. Our government is changing that. I want to speak directly to San Francisco’s public-school parents and our students. I know many of you are worried about the possibility of a teacher strike that could temporarily close schools—and I want you to hear this clearly from me: our kids come first. As mayor, even though I don’t oversee our school district, I’m deeply committed to making sure our kids get a world-class education—with safe public schools where kids can learn and educators are well supported. It is crucial that our schools remain open. Every day in the classroom matters. I have been in regular contact with both the school district and the teachers union, and I am urging them to keep talking so kids can keep learning. Our working parents can’t afford to stay home if schools are closed. Our special needs students can’t afford to lose access to vital services that help them succeed. Schools are the foundation that makes daily life possible and helps every family in San Francisco thrive. I am also actively working with city departments to ensure we have options for our students in the event that classrooms do close. But I want to make one thing clear—what is best for our students is for the adults to continue discussions at the table so we can keep kids in the classroom. I will continue pushing for solutions that keep our schools open and our students learning. San Francisco’s families deserve nothing less.

Even at 40% that’s less than half our kids finishing high school proficient at English This is horrible

Director of education for HiTops, an LGBTQ+ nonprofit focused on bringing queer theory and gender ideology into schools, says that the most critical time to get in the classroom are grades 5-8, to “catch kids when they’re starting puberty.” She goes onto say the the most rewarding experience for her was after going into an elementary school, 5 of students went to the principal’s office and “came out.” This is simply demonic. But they’re not coming for your kids, right?
