New mural of Iryna Zarutska is now starting to go up in Providence, Rhode Island! Artist Ian Gaudreau had been working on a previous mural of Iryna at the LGBTQ bar The Dark Lady. But after condemnation by Mayor Brett Smiley and other protesters, the club announced it would cancel the mural project. Now the restaurant “Opa” on Federal Hill is allowing the mural of the slain Ukrainian to be painted on their building. Statement from the owner of Opa, Francois Karam, on the new mural of Iryna: “She was once an immigrant chasing the American dream. She worked to build a life for herself and lost it along the way. This mural is our way of honoring her on a building owned by an immigrant family who understands that journey.” This is great news! Compliments to Gaudreau, Opa, and everyone who has rallied to remember Iryna.

Mayor Brett Smiley is demanding it be torn down, calling it “divisive.” If this had happened to me, a lifelong Rhode Islander born and raised right here, would they rip my mural down too, just because I’m not a Democrat? For years Rhode Island has been pushing to disarm women and endanger their lives, but the same type of career criminal that killed Iryna isn't going to stop hurting people just because of a law.
