PSA: Saronic’s 1st autonomous boat “prototype” was an $800 raft they bought on Amazon. CEO Dino Mavrookas (Dino Mavrookas): “We don't technically count that as a prototype. But I guess it is.” “It was just this plastic fishing boat & our software engineers took $30,000 worth of cameras, batteries,... show more

@Saronic @MavrookasD one of the coolest companies

@Saronic @MavrookasD Reminds me of a guy I used to work with who saw Fourier transforms in bathroom tile … software engineers look at an $800 raft and see an autonomy stack. The boat is almost an afterthought

@Saronic @MavrookasD Did you have to obtain a secret clearance to view the motors ? You're camera man got the shaft.

@Saronic @MavrookasD ++

@Saronic @MavrookasD Wow !!

$30k of sensors on an $800 hull is the right ratio, and the reason isn't thrift. the raft holds the boring variable constant. every failure in month one is an autonomy failure, because the boat is a known quantity. build the hull at the same time and a bad run could be either, and you've spent the expensive early months unable to attribute anything. most teams get this backwards because building the hull feels like progress.

@Saronic @MavrookasD Every time!

@Saronic @MavrookasD Kinda sad you weren't wearing one of your black dresses but it was still a great interview.

@Saronic @MavrookasD $800 raft from Amazon. Saronic isn't building marine robotics. They're doing capex cosplay with a Prime account. ship real units or die trying

@Saronic @MavrookasD Building in parallel is what separates the rookies from the legends
