California: During the most critical part of wildfire operations on the Bain Fire in Riverside County this afternoon, air operations were shut down due to a civilian drone flying over the fire. (Audio attached) This was at a time that structures were under threat, as well as lives of both civilians and firefighters. They had multiple tankers working the fire on a “no divert” for life safety, and some idiot flew their drone over the fire likely hindering protection of both life and property. Last year, California had 186 drone incursions over fires, over 75% of those led to the halting of, or delaying of aviation operations over active wildfires. It’s a major problem. One punctured through the wing of a scooper. The number was so high, they excluded it from national numbers so it wouldn’t skew the annual trend graph.
