From fragile to flourishing — it’s hard to believe how far Toto has come. When he was rescued - brought to us in Ithumba by some of our ex-orphans! - Toto was frightened and alone. He arrived at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery in poor condition, requiring round-the-clock care, but even then with a big personality! Today, he’s one of the most steady and nurturing elephants in our little Kaluku herd — with a big soft spot for his pseudo elephant sister 'Korbessa'. When he hears his specialist formula milk being prepared outside, he stretches his trunk up to his Keeper's bunk bed and snatches the blanket right off the sleeping man. If this is not effective, he moves on to Plan B. Somehow – a skill most elephants of his age have not yet mastered – he balances on his hind legs and plonks his front legs on the edge of the bed, waking his Keeper with a trunk kiss. At Kaluku Field Headquarters, four orphans are growing up together. Each arrived here against extraordinary odds. Mwinzi was found comatose in the Amboseli dust, felled by drought before he was five months old. He revived in an hour and has been making up for lost time ever since – currently the most enthusiastic consumer of leafy branches at Kaluku by some distance. She's glued to her Keepers so she has a designated patch of yard overlooking the milk-mixing area, where she supervises bottle preparation each morning. Taroha has developed a new habit: he finishes his first milk bottle and puts it down normally. He finishes his second – and walks away with it clasped in his trunk. When a Keeper tries to get it back, he runs! His enthusiasm is the same as it was in May 2024 (listen for that rumble at the end!). Taroha came to us by way of a JCB bucket. He had been found alone on the shores of Lake Jipe and it was the only vehicle rescuers had access to at the time. By the time he arrived at our Nairobi Nursery, his journey had included an overnight stay at our Voi Unit and a flight aboard an aeroplane. But he was safe, and with his new family:

Our newest rescue, Arthi, is finding his footing at our Nursery. He was found all alone in the Tsavo wilderness, frightened and unsure. But this uncertain little bull who arrived in August has been replaced by a friendly, outgoing elephant who has really bonded with his Keepers. It’s the little signs that show he’s truly settled - from trumpeting for his milk, to taking the lead on walks, and joining in playful games of peekaboo. This is especially apparent during milk feeds, which unfold like a well orchestrated dance. After the boys finish their own bottles – Mwinzi first, Natibu second – they don't rush away. They have cottoned onto the fact that Bondeni, seen at the end, is the herd's 'slow drinker.' Never ones to miss an opportunity for free milk, they loiter behind the Keeper feeding him, just in case he might tire of inching through Bondeni's bottle and feed it to them instead. Natibu, Mwinzi, and Toto (not seen here; he's in the next feeding group) graduated from our Kaluku Nursery to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in late April. This move marked the next chapter in their journey back to the wild – one that will continue to unfold over the coming years, as the boys gain their independence and learn from older, wiser friends. For animals without fur, mud is essential skincare. A good coating seals moisture into the skin, blocks biting insects, and protects against the Kenyan sun. At our Kaluku Neonate Unit, orphan rhino Chamboi took his mud baths seriously as a baby, helped by his Keepers who gave him personalised pampering sessions. Today, Chamboi is older and bigger, though his Keepers still shovel mud over his body as he reclines in his wallow. Bombi the zebra likes to 'supervise' veterinary operations at the airstrip, and Bibi the buffalo is growing up alongside them, learning the rhythms of the bush. Antelope of all sizes are cared for by Keeper Peter, and then there's Chamboi, our quirky young black rhino who arrived as a newborn. He lets out high-pitched squeaks when his milk is being prepared, an uncharacteristic but unmistakable rhino sound that means 'hurry up!' Each of these orphans arrived in need of round-the-clock care, specialist milk formula, and the unwavering dedication of their Keepers. When they are ready, each will live independently in the wild spaces that lie beyond Kaluku. Mermaiding with the sweetest hippo in all the land, water, and world! Now being cared for at our Kaluku Nursery, orphaned hippo Bumpy's story could have ended very differently. He was rescued in May, after his mother died – likely in a territorial fight defending her baby's life. He spent at least a day huddled by her body before the Kenya Wildlife Service found him and brought him into our care. You can become part of Bumpy's journey. Today marks three years since Taroha arrived in our care – by way of a JCB bucket. And as you can see, he's blossomed into our Nairobi Nursery's eldest bull with the politest, most calm character. Here's a wonderful little moment to demonstrate: back in 2025, he made a point of stopping by blind black rhino Maxwell's stockade every morning to say hello. Our blind rhino has lived at the Nursery for over 20 years, and over time, many orphans have formed their own special routines with him. Taroha was no exception. Discover his rescue story in full:

🚨#BREAKING: A 14-year-old boy is being praised as a HERO after he used his LASSO to SAVE A DROWNING MAN AND DRAG HIM TO SHORE... ...ON HIS FIRST THROW!!! His name is Jory Thomas, he's a 14-year-old from Montana. On July 5, he was camping with his family near Greycliff when a raft and paddleboard slammed into a bridge pillar and threw four people into the river. Three made it out... but one man did not. He kept drifting downstream, clinging to a cooler, the current pulling him away fast. "We all heard, 'Help, help'… and he wasn't saying anything." Jory didn't wait. He emptied his pockets, ran through a waist-deep channel, and sprinted down the riverbank to catch up to him. And this year, for the very first time, he'd brought his lariat. His grandmother Sandy said they've camped at that spot for years and he had NEVER, EVER brought his rope before. "And that day he did." Jory took his 12-foot lariat, aimed at a drowning stranger, and threw. "Luckily, I caught him first try." FIRST throw!!! He roped him and hen he pulled that man through chest-deep water all the way to shore and held on until first responders arrived. His dad and his brothers are on the local fire department. Jory knew waiting wasn't an option. "God was basically putting me in the place of all this." His grandma wasn't even surprised. "His first instinct always is to help other people. He's always been that way." A 14-year-old spent all year roping a practice dummy in his backyard because he loved it… …and it made him the reason a man is alive today.
