Pulseman for the Mega Drive (by Game Freak/1994) was released exclusively in Japan, but in 1995 it was made available in North America via the Sega Channel service. It's regarded as a high-quality "hidden gem" and many of its devs became key staff on the Pokémon series later. ⚡

Elemental Master is a Sega Mega Drive/Genesis exclusive. Developed by Technosoft (makers of the Thunder Force series) and released in 1990 (Japan) and 1993 (North America), it's a quality fantasy-themed vertical shooter with a nice soundtrack by Toshiharu Yamanishi.🎧

Mr. Gimmick (Sunsoft/1992, known as Gimmick! in Japan) was released for the NES in 1993 only in Scandinavia. Using advanced techniques and made with a large staff, it's renowned for its quality and it's truly a gem. Gimmick! Special Edition was released in 2023 for modern consoles and PC.

Asterix for the Sega Master System is a high-quality 8-bit platformer released in 1991 by Sega. With good graphics, responsive controls and distinct character mechanics (you start with Asterix then change to Obelix later, etc.), it's another late gem for the system that was positively received. Released in Japan, Europe and Brazil, it was unsurprisingly omitted from the North American market (probably because the comic book isn't popular there).

Ghost Sweeper Mikami is a game for the Super Famicom released exclusively in Japan in 1993. It's an action-platformer based on the anime/manga series of the same name. Natsume is known for other high-quality action titles on the NES/SNES and this is a hidden gem. No language knowledge is required, the gameplay is straightforward.

30 years ago, Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya was released for Sega's Game Gear in North America. This was my favorite RPG on Game Gear! It was later remade in 16-bit for Shining Force CD on Sega CD.

Released in 1994 and later reissued in 1995, “Set You Free” became a breakout hit for N-Trance. Performed here on Top of the Pops, the track appears on Electronic Pleasure and is widely regarded as one of the defining UK dance anthems of the decade.

NEKKETSU OYAKO ('Hot-Blooded Family') for the PlayStation (Technosoft/1995). Beat 'em up from the makers of the famous Thunder Force shooter series. Only released in Japan, it's also available for the Saturn, making it a bit of a hidden gem. Although an English fan translation is available for the PlayStation version.

Moon Crystal for the Famicom (by Hect/1992) is a 2D action-platformer with remarkably fluid animations, rarely seen on 8-bit hardware. Never officially released in North America or Europe (on NES), but even so, it's highly regarded by retro gaming fans due to its high quality. Has not yet re-released or included in any modern game collection for a modern system.

34 years ago, Phantasy Star 2 was released for the Sega Genesis in North America! 🥳🎂🎉 For the time, it was a revolutionary RPG. It introduced features and story elements that wouldn't be seen again in RPGs until years later. Did you ever play this game?

Today 19 years ago #TEKKEN5 was released on PS2 in Japan. The game went back to its classic roots and brought Bruce, Beak, Wang and Ganryu back playable. For many It's the best TEKKEN game ever made along with the best opening of the series. What are your memories of TEKKEN 5?
