The Ice Has Broken: Baby Punch Appears to Have Been Accepted by the Troop Punch, the macaque who used to carry his plush “mom” everywhere, is no longer alone. He has bonded with another monkey, who has started caring for him and grooming him — a key sign of trust and acceptance among primates. He was also seen playing with other monkeys, who did not show aggression toward him. It seems this story has finally taken a happy turn.

More information about Punch, the baby monkey at Ichikawa Zoo in Japan. He was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth and has been hand‑raised by zookeepers. They gave him a plush orangutan toy, which he carries everywhere, hugging it while he sleeps, using it for comfort when he feels nervous, and even taking it with him as he interacts with the other monkeys. In mid‑January, Punch was successfully introduced to a group of other macaques at the zoo, though he still stays close to his cuddly companion as he adjusts.

The zoo gaslighting Punch and his supporters AGAIN. Punch is the only baby monkey without a mom. He is the lowest ranking troop member because of it. Punch is a target and much more susceptible to being attacked which we have been watching all week. The other monkeys have their mother and family’s protection. Punch had his dad a few minutes a day. It brings him comfort. The zoo has decided his dads are to have no contact with them. It’s deplorable and cruel.

Update on Punch the Monkey 🐒. Punch (or Punch-kun), a Japanese macaque at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Chiba, Japan. Born in July 2025, Punch was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth, a common, heartbreaking occurrence for first-time or stressed mothers in captivity. Here is what happened with Punch: •The Struggle: After being hand-raised by zookeepers, Punch was introduced to the zoo's monkey enclosure in January 2026. However, he struggled to integrate with the troop, failing to understand social cues and feeling anxious. •The Stuffed Toy: To provide comfort, safety, and warmth, keepers gave him an oversized, plush stuffed orangutan. Punch quickly bonded with this toy, which he treated as a surrogate mother, dragging it around, sleeping with it, and holding it for support when he felt overwhelmed or scared. •Viral Fame & Crowds: Images of the tiny monkey clinging to his "Oran Mama" (as fans called the toy) went viral in February 2026, leading to massive, unexpected crowds at the small zoo. •Recent Update: According to updates as of February 18-19, 2026, Punch is showing positive signs of progress. He has begun building social skills, playing with other young monkeys, and was even recently groomed by an adult macaque—a sign of growing acceptance into the troop. • Following the viral story, IKEA Japan donated more of the same plush toys to ensure Punch always has his comfort companion. • While he still keeps his toy close, Punch is slowly learning to live as a member of the troop, with many people online following his progress using the hashtag #HangInTherePunch.

A baby monkey rejected by his entire family uses a stuffed orangutan as a surrogate mother. Punch was born at a Japanese zoo in July 2025 but his mother and troop immediately abandoned him. Zookeepers gave the infant a plush toy to provide necessary contact comfort. The six-month-old macaque now carries the stuffed animal everywhere for security while learning to socialize with other monkeys.

Regarding "the video of Punch gets dragged around" that appeared to have been recorded yesterday, February 19. This is a statement from the zookeepers at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Gardens. Fabruary 20. We have confirmed that several videos have gone viral on the internet. When Punch approached another baby monkey from the troop in attempt to communicate, the baby monkey avoided him. Punch then sat down, apparently giving up on communicating with the monkey, after which he was scolded and dragged by an adult monkey. The adult monkey that dragged Punch is probably the mother of the monkey with whom Punch tried to communicate. She probably felt that her baby was annoyed by Punch and got upset, expressing "don't be mean." Punch has been scolded by other monkeys many times in the past and has learned how to socialize with them. In the video, Punch runs to his stuffed orangutan toy after being dragged. However, as usual, he left the stuffed toy after a short while and was communicating with other monkeys. The video was probably recorded on the morning of February 19. During feeding time at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., Punch acted no differently than on any other day. In order to integrate Punch into other Japanese monkey troops, we anticipated that this kind of challenge may arise. Although Punch has been scolded many times by other monkeys, no single monkey has shown serious aggression toward him. While Punch is scolded, he shows resilience and mental strength. When you observe these disciplinary behaviors from other troop members toward Punch when he tries to communicate with them, we would like you to support Punch's effort rather than feel sorry for him.

After the incident, Punch went back to separate his plush toy from the others. It looked like he was trying to keep it safe, because he doesn't like when other monkeys touch it. Shikano even seemed a little upset about what had happened. But while Punch was heading upstairs with his plush toy, another monkey suddenly attacked him.

Some people were wondering where Punch plush toy was. It is always there inside the cave. He brought the plush toy out again yesterday before feeding time because he was scared. Thankfully Shikano was aware he was inside the cave & Miyakoshi also knows now when Punch brings the toy out during feeding time, that means he's scared. And he directly brought Punch inside without trying to put him down ❤️. By the way, Punch was okay. No need to worry. 🎥: Connect Japan

Punch is really smart. He has learnt from yesterday. Today (8 March) when Akira, the boss/leader of the group walked, followed by all the monkeys walked in line behind, Punch cleverly hid behind the rock with his plush toy until all the troop's gone 😊👍. 🎥: cocolulu_rabbit

Sad news: Baby Punch will be separated from his plush "mom" The toy had been his only friend for a long time, as other monkeys refused to accept him into their group. Now, the soft orangutan from IKEA is actually hindering the baby from forming real bonds with his peers. In the coming months, the baby and his plush mom will be separated 😢

A baby monkey rejected by his mother carries a stuffed toy everywhere he goes, and the internet cannot handle it. Punch, a Japanese macaque born in 2025, at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, was abandoned at birth and hand-raised by zookeepers. Unable to replace a mother’s embrace, keepers gave him a plush orangutan toy, nicknamed “Ora-mama,” for comfort. Punch hugs it while sleeping, carries it on his back, and clings to it when other monkeys reject him.
