To minimize the risk of urban flooding and to strengthen the capacity of cities to manage stormwater effectively, a landmark initiative has been launched. For the first time in the history of Punjab, 358 Underground Storage Tanks (UGSs), including roadside underground storage systems equipped with recharge wells, are being constructed across the province. This major infrastructure project, with an estimated cost of Rs. 33 billion, will provide a combined storage capacity of approximately 94 million gallons of rainwater. #WATCH | Delhi: Congress MP Manish Tewari says, "The debt-to-GDP ratio of a bulk of the Indian states is not very healthy. Unfortunately, Punjab comes right at the top with a debt-to-GDP ratio of about 55% and Punjab has a debt of Rs 4,47,000 crores or will have a debt of Rs 4,47,000 crores as of 31st March, 2027. Unfortunately, the five fundamental challenges which are critical to Punjab are: number one, the size of its public debt- Rs 447,000 crores, a completely skewed debt-to-GDP ratio, the fact that 84% of Punjab's farmers have between 2 and 5 acres of land; and despite the minimum support price, agriculture is no longer sustainable as a standalone occupation. Number three, Punjab's water table in the last three decades has plunged by between 30 and 40 meters. There are certain districts of Punjab, especially in southern Punjab, where water has gone as low as 600 or 700ft. Therefore, Punjab is in danger of running out of groundwater because of the kind of cultivation it has been doing over the decades. Number four, the biggest industry in Punjab, because of lack of industry, lack of skilling, has been IELTS- English language test that children take to go abroad. Now, barriers to entry everywhere around the world are going up. So under those circumstances how will the youth of Punjab find employment? And number five, Punjab is in the grip of narco terrorism, which is colloquially called gangsterism. None of these five issues are figuring prominently in the public discourse of Punjab as it leads up to the Vidhan Sabha elections of 2027. So, are elections just a gladiatorial contest to seize power? Or do political parties need to seriously deliberate upon the fundamental crisis that is pushing Punjab into an abyss from which it may not ever emerge? This is the fundamental crisis before Punjab..."
