Putin has admitted that Ukraine’s summer bombing campaign inflicted damage equivalent to around 1% of Russia’s GDP, while insisting the losses were “not critical” for the Russian economy. “Around 100 ships were damaged, people were killed, including foreigners, citizens of Azerbaijan and Turkey. “And the overall damage, according to... our preliminary estimates, was, well, not insignificant, around 1% of GDP,” Putin said. Putin said Russia subsequently decided to retaliate in kind. “They opened Pandora’s box themselves,” he said, warning that Ukraine had since “felt the threat to its economy.” He claimed Ukraine spends around $8 billion a month on imports while earning about $3 billion from exports, with the remaining $5 billion covered by Western assistance. “That's how Ukraine survives,” Putin said. “I’m not saying that we will bring down the economy,” he added. “But there are three possible crises [for them] currency, budgetary and banking.”show more
