Putrajaya announced today that it plans to develop its own Malay large language model for use in generative AI. The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry said research & development centre Mimos will collaborate with local startup Mesolitica Sdn Bhd on the project. 🧵1

Other ministries involved include the Health, Digital, Higher Education Ministries, and the Prime Minister’s Department. The LLM will also adhere to the National Guidelines on AI Governance and Ethics, to ensure compliance with Malaysian values and customs. 🧵2

Does the LLM function for English or is it only for BM? Will it do worse/better/same because it just trains on Malaysian websites? What are it's environmental impacts and is it measured in any way? What is it's policy on the data source it uses?
