I will be pushing for a moratorium on the construction of data centers that are powering the unregulated sprint to develop & deploy AI. The moratorium will give democracy a chance to catch up, and ensure that the benefits of technology work for all of us, not just the 1%.

I'm so sick of "democracy"

“Can you guys stop innovating? I’m too dumb to keep up”

god you're so old and stupid please just fucking go away

translation: i want china to win the ai race

my fantasy is you're forced to take a lie detector test and we get to ask you questions like "in the 1970s, were you rooting for the soviet union," and "would it be better that the average person is poorer provided everyone is paid the same amount of money"

Authoritarian restrictions on private investment. Seizure of control over infrastructure. Bureaucratic choke points that decide who may innovate and who must wait. Political permission replacing voluntary exchange. Destruction of progress until the state feels “ready.” A moratorium isn’t democracy “catching up.” It’s politicians freezing reality so power can centralize. If democracy were actually the goal, people would be free to build, compete, and choose. If AI delivers value, it spreads. If it doesn’t, it fails. That’s democratic in the only sense that matters. Voluntary adoption. What he really can’t tolerate isn’t risk or safety. It’s progress he doesn’t control. The phrase “for the 1%” is just the moral pretext. The actual outcome is always the same. Fewer builders. Fewer competitors. More gatekeepers. More state power. Democracy, in this language, means rule by regulators over producers, and obedience by everyone else.

hear me out

Do you even know what a datacenter is

Xi approves your dipshit sTRaTeGy

sukh mah dikh

Bernie, respectfully, stay in your own lane. You don’t understand much, let alone AI. We need to keep innovating, if not our competitors will. Sit this one out.

this would result in the free tiers of AI products being removed and nerfed, while anyone who can afford the even-more-scarce compute (the wealthy!) use AI to surpass everyone else

This video is a great example of why you should be forced to demonstrate even a basic understanding of something before trying to regulate it

Hard no

You telling the Chinese to take a break as well?

with all due respect sir this is very very regarded. some basic understanding would help. the democratization of & equal accessibility to technology is all that matters for humanity in the long term. this investment makes things equally accessible to powerful tools for every person in the country & often completely free to boot. when you spew this kind of nonsense, you ironically make it so that only rich people can access these things.

"pushing for a moratorium" = more government oversight and bureaucracy "give democracy a chance to catch up" = time for politicians to figure out new tax schemes "the benefits of technology work for all of us" = equity over innovation #NoThanks Bernie.

are you seriously trying to NIMBY data centers? Constrain AI compute and free tiers will vanish and only the rich will have the best AI Imagine going to school and only the rich have AI to help learn This will do the exact opposite thing you are aiming for…

Thank you, @SenSanders. Big Tech must stop polluting environment & straining our energy grids.

My fear is China leaping ahead of us though.

I agree with your concerns and your goals, but disagree that this is a good means to achieve them. We need actual AI regulation, not NIMBYism about datacenters. The companies will just build them elsewhere.

Straight outta Atlas Shrugged: "Point Four. No new devices, inventions, products, or goods of any nature whatsoever, not now on the market, shall be produced, invented, manufactured or sold after the date of this directive...."

“I am once again asking you to harm yourself and your country.”

How much is China paying him?

Slowing down our AI development only helps China. If they develop superior AI to us especially in the military, it's game over. Socialists like Bernie regulating our breakthrough innovation sounds more like an anchor than a boost to our economy.

Yeah man

YAY BUREAUCRACY!!! MOAR MOAR MOAR

i agree with many of your concerns around risk and governance but “nimby the data centers” is going to make the problems worse and not better

Old man yells at cloud

Tbf this doesn’t benefit the 1%

What you are calling ‘democracy’ here is better understood as illiberal big government.

Bernie, your proposal is a recipe for national obsolescence. While you attempt to strangle American innovation with bureaucratic red tape, our global competitors are sprinting toward dominance. AI and data center investments accounted for eighty percent of our domestic demand growth this year; halting them would trigger a needless recession. Your "democracy catching up" is just a euphemism for permanent stagnation. You value central control more than American prosperity. We will not hand the future to China just to satisfy your socialist fever dreams. Stay in the past where your ideas belong.
