First video of LK-99 Full Levitation, aka flux-pinning This video was just posted to the Chinese video-sharing site BiliBili and claims to be a highly pure synthesized sample of LK-99. What is the physical phenomenon behind this and what does it mean? Levitation of superconducting materials is a phenomenon unique to what is called Type-II superconductors, and is an effect whereby magnetic field lines becomes 'trapped' as it passes through the material, providing the force needed to levitate. These are the popular images and videos of cryogenically-cooled discs floating above a magnet frequently seen online and in the pinned post on my profile. You can think of this like strands of hair being caught in gum - the gum is suspended in mid-air by adhering strongly to the hair as the hair passes through it. The hair in this case is magnetic field lines and the gum is the Type-II superconductor. Just like hair comes in individual strands, or in other words hair is 'quantized' or 'discrete', so is the flux trapped at the 'pinning centers' quantized in what are called 'magnetic vortices' - the quantization of pinned flux lines is a key property and distinguishing characteristic of Type-II superconductors (although technically can occur in Type-I superconductors if the material thickness is smaller than the London penetration depth, which is indeed very small - specifics for the physics nerds out there). Flux-pinning is entirely unique to superconductors and is also wholly distinct from the Meissner effect. It is not a property of diamagnets or diamagnetism. At TRIUMF I contributed to flux-pinning studies in Niobium crystal superconducting radio-frequency cavities used for particle acceleration. In that application, trapped flux poses an issue by increasing the remnant surface resistivity of the cavity, which has the effect of decreasing its effective quality factor or Q-factor, which is a measurement of a resonators efficiency. SRF cavities typically have Q-factors of 10E10 and trapped flux at pinning centers reduces the maximum effective accelerating electric field used to drive charged particle bunches close to the speed of light. Flux pinning is thought to arise in some Type-II superconductors by small imperfections in the crystal, also called volume defects, that enable flux to penetrate the material. In SRF cavities an issue that arises is any magnetic field that is passing through the material, e.g. by the Earth's background field, can become pinned or trapped inside the cavity as it transitions into a superconducting state. See some attached plots in the comments from a study showing how the surface resistivity of SRF cavities increases the more there is a background field as the cavity transitions into superconducting state. This is the first video I am aware of that claims to show the flux-pinned levitation of a LK-99 sample. Yesterday at Brown University ICERM's workshop on “Agentic Scientific Computing and Scientific Machine Learning” I spoke about “Adaptive Swarms Across Scales”, making the case for scientific AI as systems that can create representations, stress them, fracture them, and enlarge the category in which future representations live. The category here is a composable and breakable working universe of science: data, hypotheses, simulations, measurements, tools, failures, figures, papers, provenance, and the transformations that connect them. Discovery happens when those transformations become executable, inspectable, composable, and capable of changing the world model they operate within. Atomistic modeling gives one category - states, forces, trajectories, observables, boundary conditions, conservation laws. Neural surrogates learn fast morphisms inside or between such categories. But discovery is higher-order: it changes which objects and morphisms are available in the first place: what variables exist, what operations are allowed, what evidence counts, what scale is active, what invariant is being preserved, and what kind of explanation the system is even capable of forming. This is scientific method as adaptive architecture: compression, stress, fracture, recomposition. Fracture matters here because it makes the logic physical: a non-commuting diagram realized in matter. The imposed load, material hierarchy, defect field, and assumed continuum description no longer map cleanly into the observed outcome. The crack is the obstruction and it identifies where the old morphism failed and where a new representation must be introduced. The physical crack and the categorical obstruction are the same event viewed in different substrates. ScienceClaw × Infinite is a machine for constructing and transforming a category of scientific artifacts. Each artifact is typed. Each operation has lineage. Each failed branch remains in the category as reusable structure. The “paper” is no longer the terminal object of science; it is one projection of a larger compositional trace, and it can be generated at any time for consumption by a human or an AI. With that the unit of scientific labor is changing. For most of the twentieth century the unit was the result (a measurement, a theorem, a synthesized molecule). It is now becoming the algorithm that produces results, and after that, the substrate of discovery itself. The static PDF is the wrong terminal object for this regime, and the role of the scientist with it. We now design algorithms that build algorithms, and eventually substrates in which such algorithms compose themselves. At that point, the scientist is no longer outside the discovery system. The scientist becomes one of the representations the system can transform. In that sense, the systems will eventually do science to us, and that is the structural consequence of the principle they are built on.

Might be time to give up on Bobcat Company . When our machine was in the shop, we had them replace the drive belt. First job out today, the drive belt fails. Machine’s now stranded on the customer’s property and completely immobile. We called it in and were told the earliest a tech could come out is next Tuesday. That’s a full week of a machine just sitting, dead in the water. Totally unacceptable and not a good sign of reliability. They charged us for a new belt and pulley, which we’ll now be installing ourselves tomorrow. And they tried to spin it like maybe we did something wrong. We didn’t. At the exact same time, our other machine starts spewing hydraulic fluid from the arm. No obvious cause. Our 2025 has been in the shop 5 times already. The 2019? Even more. I’d understand this stuff if we were slamming these things into trees or neglecting maintenance, but that’s not what’s happening. These are just mechanical issues that keep stacking up. All this is happening while we’re right at the finish line on buying a new T86. Honestly? I’m second guessing it. The guys in service and sales have been great, no complaints there, but the reliability just hasn’t been. We need a third machine, and we need it yesterday. Starting to look hard at the Takeuchi TL12 now. We’ll see what happens.

An incredibly rare situation as Imelda and Humberto *merge* in the Northwest Atlantic – two active hurricanes combining into one larger, more powerful hurricane! On Tuesday morning, Humberto and Imelda were separated by just 476.4 miles – second place to the record for closest Atlantic hurricanes. (Two hurricanes in 1853 made it to within 428 miles of one another). When hurricanes pass within 800 or 900 miles of each other, they interact in a rare dance called the "Fujiwhara." Basically, they dance around each other. Humberto was initially a much stronger hurricane. Over the weekend, it yanked Imelda eastward. That technically means that a hurricane helped spare the U.S. a strike from another hurricane! How ironic and bizarre is that!? But now Imelda is the stronger hurricane. It has winds of 90 mph, and Humberto's winds are at 80 mph. In the next couple days, Imelda will ingest Humberto's vorticity, or spin, and the two low pressure systems will fold into one larger, more powerful low over the northwest Atlantic. It will probably retain hurricane-strength winds, and it's likely the Hurricane Center will allow Imelda to keep its name! The Fujiwhara effect has happened before – iconic examples of the Fujiwhara dance were observed with Odette and Seroja in the Indian Ocean in 2021, or Hilary and Irwin in the eastern Pacific in 2017. The Fujiwhara effect happens with atmospheric vortices of all scales. For nontropical (midlatitude) cyclones to be influenced by each other’s presence and interact, they need to be within about 1,500 to 2,000 miles. Their interaction becomes more intense once they’re within about 1,200 miles. Hurricanes are smaller, so that threshold is smaller. But even tornadoes orbit one another in Fujiwhara-like interactions! When a storm spawns multiple tornadoes simultaneously, the twisters tend to swirl around each other in a counterclockwise fashion. In fact, that happens regularly with what’s called cyclical tornadogenesis, or the process by which rotating supercells produce successive tornadoes. A dying twister is tugged ahead of its successor, then swirled left (north) into the rain and hail where it’s stretched into oblivion. As its predecessor dissipates, the new, stout tornado matures and begins tracing its large counterclockwise path. These handoffs can happen every 15 or 20 minutes in powerhouse thunderstorms. The Fujiwhara effect can even manifest within individual tornadoes. Most tornadoes contain smaller whirlwinds called subvortices. They last a few seconds each, and whip around the parent funnel. Individual subvortices can locally enhance the parent tornado’s wind field, leading to narrow swaths of extreme destruction. That’s why one home might be obliterated while a neighboring structure escapes unscathed

Slow Progress is the New Reality of Modern Wars There are many people commenting on Russian difficulties and coming up with numerous reasons for their alleged collapse. I absolutely do not see any collapse; on the contrary, Russia has already normalized a state of war in Ukraine, which boosts its economic and industrial growth. The difficulties faced by Russia today are the same as at the beginning of the war, with soldiers having to spend up to half of their initial salaries on their own equipment, delays in pensions, and a series of other problems that are mirrored on the Ukrainian side, even with all the support from allies. The war today is much less lethal than it was months ago, and both Russian and Ukrainian losses have significantly decreased during this phase. Lethality has fallen, but Russian advances persist. And why are they slow? Is it a Ukrainian tactic? No. They are slow because they are accompanied by the deployment of communication infrastructure like signal repeaters for drones, the advancement of artillery guided by drones, maneuvers using FAB and more recently ODAB bombs against Ukrainian drone operators' facilities, infiltration by reconnaissance teams, saboteurs, and a series of protocols they have developed. That conventional war with rapid advances no longer exists, and in the context of a battlefield dominated by drones, it is unlikely to return. Modern wars will have slow progress, as seen in the attacks and counter-attacks of the Russians and Ukrainians in this war. Contemporary military forces are still unable to see this new reality of war. The Australian government does not deserve our trust, or our respect. Today, Minister Penny Wong sat back in her chair grappling for words, desperately looking for the right lie to tell. It is worse than dishonest - it is an absolute lack of care. Penny Wong came to this country when she was 8 years old. She came to a country that afforded her the ability to become who she is, and she is now doing her part to destroy it. Back in the 70’s, when she came, Australia was a fair-minded place and a great place to be. Yet here she is... Here in Australia. Undermining our country and lying to our faces. Because she can’t tell the truth. Because if she did, it would destroy any semblance of care for Australia tied to her old party’s Labor brand. It would say the quiet part out loud. The truth. The truth that the Albanese government is more interested in the fortunes of the ISIS brides, women who chose to leave this country to go and fight against our people, than those of us that can’t find or afford a place to live here at home. I am tired of being told how to think by people that completely lack morals and couldn’t care less. People that are elected and paid to operate in the national interest but always put their twisted ethics and back pockets ahead of our nation and our people. I don’t know when Labor stopped caring about Australian workers or worse, when they started hating Australia, but they have and they do. The absolute lack of opposition, the lack of authentic choice has pushed us into a place where these absolute traitors to the interests of the people who pay them - goes entirely unchecked. We are careening out of control, unchecked migration, an energy grid that is just about to collapse, no industry to speak of, and no good reason to start or maintain a business in this place. It happened fast, but those of us who pay our taxes and take risks to make Australia a better place, are being undermined and white-anted by our politicians. The people we are forced to trust, and must pretend to respect, because they have the force of law on their side. Not because they are any good at their jobs. Not because they have earned our affection. No. Simply because they are in charge and there is little to nothing that can be done about it. It is becoming apparent that the two party system has outlived its useful life. Too much corruption, too many words too carefully chosen in a pantomime between to political forces that don’t really want to change anything. They just want to have their go, to have their turn to jam their grubby hands into the till. Surely with this major and catastrophic failure by the so-called Honourable Minister Senator Wong, the people will be able to see through the veil and into the absolute and irresponsible lack of care at the heart of this deceitful Labor government. They lie about everything, and they can, because they don’t have an opposition worthy of the title. I am growing more confident by the day that the only solution to our woes is a new political force, a fresh, Australia first force, that will act in the national interest and put all these corrupt and useless used-car salesmen red and blue in the dustbin of history. It can’t come soon enough. Time is short. I just want Australia back.

Beauty should be a core pursuit of biotechnology. There should be companies and nonprofits that engineer organisms solely for the sake of crafting beautiful things. A few reasons why: 1/ Biotechnology has historically worked in reductionist ways, but many useful functions only emerge at the systems level. By engineering a systems-level outcome, like beauty, we will get much better at engineering organisms in predictable ways. When I say "reductionist," I mean that most useful things in biotechnology (drugs and tools) were discovered by stripping molecules from their natural contexts. Scientists collect organisms from soil or wherever and then study their molecules in isolation. This basic approach has yielded everything from rapamycin to antibiotics and CRISPR. This reductionism, though, means that that we know disturbingly little about how life actually works at a systems-level. My core argument is that, by studying beauty, we can remedy this. Beauty has persisted through tens of millions of years of evolution because it is functional; bright colors help attract pollinators to a plant, for example, which helps the plant breed. If evolution has created all of this beauty for functional reasons, then it stands to reason that by trying to create **new** forms of beauty, we'll be able to discover and understand how these systems-level functions work! Indeed, we may even be able to create entirely new functions that biology hasn't evolved yet. These functions will not possible to understand via isolated molecules or reductionism. Therefore, a company pursuing engineered beauty for the sake of beauty will probably make many fundamental discoveries about how organisms develop, interact, adapt to their surroundings, and so on. 2/ Beauty is a way to grow the field and bring more people into biotechnology. Nick Desnoyer’s flower design work, for example, has probably reached hundreds of thousands of people. The glowing plants from Light Bio, too, were featured in the mainstream press. You may not think that these examples are “important” for the universe relative to, say, an incrementally better cancer therapeutic, but there’s no question that they are way more popular to mainstream audiences and good, overall, for the field. 3/ The market is huge! Breeding is already widely used to engineer beauty, or at least to select for aesthetic preferences. Pugs are evolutionarily suboptimal, but they've been bred precisely to satisfy a certain aesthetic desire are now a multi-billion dollar industry. The Juliet Rose, developed via breeding over a 15-year period, debuted at the 2006 Chelsea Flower Show and is enormously profitable today.
