Dear Andrej Karpathy, Update on this. Earlier this month The Innovation Game (𝔦, 𝔦) announced a new SOTA routing algorithm had been collaboratively developed and submitted to The Innovation Game. The algorithm demonstrated the largest single perfomance jump in the modern history of the field on standard academic benchmarks: This success is a powerful proof of concept. I believe the wider implications will also interest you. As you know, the "Source" in AI is algorithms and data. These algorithms are typically for "hard to solve but easy to verify" problems. Remarkably, this allows the creation of a market for pricing improvements to these algorithms (roughly, the market is created by "racing" the algorithms, to see which can produce proof-of-work fastest). Availability of a market mechanism means open development of the algorithms can be funded by capturing a portion of the value they generate, and allocating it back to algorithm developers. The allocation is efficient, naturally integrating information (such as hardware availability) through revealed preferences. Importantly, market allocation is also "impersonal", which mitigates the risk to community cohesion that has historically afflicted Open Source projects offering monetary reward. Note: That a market for pricing code could extend Open Source to areas requiring monetary reward was (as far as I know) first suggested by Eric Raymond in 1999 Eric S. Raymond : Conclusion: The structure of Open Source AI means it can operate commercially. Just weeks ago I considered this to be a map of Superchargers. The foundation that made EV’s a going concern for the first time. But it’s not. These dots represent fully permitted and built power stations in an era where every AI player is trying to figure out how to get power for compute. This is the largest electrical power moat I’ve ever seen that can fully supply current and future charging needs while collecting and storing cheaper power during off-peak to supply an AI revolution. Elon doesn’t care who knows anymore. 2nd place is… crumbs. AWS was built from excess server space needed during peak demand. Now it’s bigger and more valuable than the core Amazon retail business. Tesla is about to drop a hardware smackdown right in the face of software engineers. AI prototypes are easy. Scaling is hard. If only Tesla had a factory pouring out millions of chips each year that are underutilized 95% of the time. Each with their own battery storage. Imagine that. Tesla could call them ‘cars’. And that power moat? It’s all fully upgradable. It’s primed to be tripled. Only a handful of Tesla charging stations currently have solar and/or Megapacks. For 14 years Tesla has permitted and built the gas stations of the future around the world. Everyone said it would fail. All of them were wrong. And now Tesla is in a process of creating a possible 10x value stamp on those stations that should have never been built. It makes you wonder, When a vehicle now leaves the Tesla factory; how do we even begin to calculate the economic production that it will generate during its lifetime? There’s a feeling of “wtf is a designer anymore” floating around… I felt it while scrolling Reddit after Figma Make was announced 😬 For some people it simply didn’t compute that a code prototype could be a design artifact. But I’ll let you in on a little secret… A few days ago I visited a well-known design leader and he said that in the last 6 months, ~40% of their team's design artifacts are now created in Lovable, Bolt, etc. That’s kind of crazy, right? It's a big reason why Ioana Teleanu (1st AI designer at Miro) said design is "in the middle of an identity crisis" So Ioana and I went deep into this topic during today's episode and I want to share a few ideas I’m still thinking about: ——— We’re in a weird moment in history where there are AI designers and non-AI designers. But this is a blip on the timeline as adoption accelerates. The idea of "AI designer" won't exist in the future Here's what Ioana said 👇 “We’re all gonna be thinking about some sort of AI angle in the way we do our work. I don’t even feel that the AI design role will exist in this explicit format in a couple of years. All the designers will be AI designers” I want to make something clear though...
