Quebec gets it. Bloc Québécois House Leader Christine Normandin was asked about Alberta separation and the referendum question. The reporter kept pressing. She refused the bait. Her answer was simple: She is not Albertan. Ottawa is not Albertan. Albertans decide. She even warned against “Papa Ottawa” talking down to people with disdain. For once, I agree with the Bloc. You do not have to support Alberta separation to understand the principle. If Albertans want to ask the question, it is Alberta’s question. Not Ottawa’s. Not federal politicians’. Not some managed national-unity script from people who helped create the anger in the first place.

I LOVE IT when Pierre Poilievre comes to Alberta. He proves every time how harmful Canadian federalism is for Alberta. Notice he never talks about the 2 to 1 discrepancy in parliamentary seats between Alberta and the maritimes, the 10 to 1 discrepancy in dairy licences between Alberta and Quebec or the 16 Billion Alberta will send to Quebec this year.

No one can just say ‘no’—the law’s clear, and Alberta holds the cards.

Mark Carney has now made it obvious: Ottawa will use the Clarity Act as a gatekeeping tool against Alberta independence. Quebec responded to the Clarity Act with Bill 99, a law asserting Quebec’s right to self-determination, defending the authority of its National Assembly, and recognizing that a referendum is decided by a majority of valid votes cast. Alberta needs its own Bill 99. The future of Alberta should be decided by Albertans, not by the House of Commons.

Premier replies that collecting our own taxes and remitting them to Ottawa is something Quebec is considering and might just make a good referendum question...
