How Annamalai and TN BJP evolved through a tough yet symbiotic relationship - A rollercoaster ride indeed! Amateurish & Ambitious Annamalai! When Annamalai took charge in 2021, BJP was in still in a very good understanding with ADMK. However, Annamalai wanted to take 10 years to grow his party in the state, position BJP against DMK, capture power in 2031 and yet remain in cordial relationship with ADMK. That was ludicrously ambitious, and a tight rope walk especially in Tamil Nadu politics where the two Dravidian parties have dominated the scene since 1972. But Annamalai had a vision. Assertive Annamalai! An ambitious Annamalai met with his first big challenge. During the 2022 Tamil Nadu local elections, Annamalai asked for a certain % of wards to contest in alliance with ADMK and when EPS refused at the last minute, Annamalai boldly decided to contest alone. BJP got around 5% votes and sent the only councilor to the Chennai Corporation. Her name is Uma Anandan. After showing growth in the local elections, came the Erode East by election 2023. There was some friction, but BJP still supported ADMK. Aggressive Annamalai! An assertive Annamalai’s biggest political landmark was ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha polls just before the beginning of the 'En Mann En Makkal' Yatra. He still wanted to stay in an alliance with ADMK and yet grow his party. He demanded 12 seats for BJP, which he thought would commensurate what his party deserved. EPS was not willing to give more than 6 seats. Annamalai, convinced Delhi HQ and boldly decided to contest alone or lead a front of his own. Adversity Annamalai! Adversity hit him. I was one of the most vociferous voices on Twitter to back Annamalai’s NDA in 2024. I believed India-BJP would get an absolute majority on its own. That is why I wrote that for Annamalai in TN, is all about votes and not seats. Unfortunately, BJP fell short and got just 240. "I am really sorry - Annamalai" Now suddenly Annamalai’s decision to contest alone with Zero MPs becomes a topic of immense scrutiny. However, it was widely credited to Annamalai that his decision to go alone made his party grow to 11.24%. In hindsight, his decision seems like a bad one. But this is politics for you. Situation is important. Arduous Annamalai! Annamalai’s next challenge was to convince the BJP HQ that it will be better to continue the 2024 alliance to 2026 too evoking his 10-year plan to grow his party and eventually capture power in 2031. However, political compulsions and fast-evolving dynamics made BJP HQ to change its Modus Operandi. Despite initial hiccups, Annamalai is now backing NDA 200%. Final words about Annamalai! Gurumurthy bats for BJP more than Annamalai because Annamalai was faster than BJP - You kidding me? Everyone knows BJP is not a sprinter, but a marathon runner. That is how the party has been able to conquer multiple terrains. Was Annamalai a sprinter? I don't think so. When Annamalai became the BJP State President in 2021, he claimed the political game is between DMK and BJP. What I gather from Annamalai is that he wanted 10 years to build BJP in TN and subsequently capture power. Annamalai wanted time to build his party. The party HQ, which initially agreed, had to take a different call. Gurumurthy should not blame Annamalai calling him fast when the party he supports was extremely fast trying to cling on to another Dravidian party. The final statement is, 2026 is not even in the equation. Then why all the drama of removing Annamalai, appointing NN, having an alliance with a perennial loser EPS, so on and so forth Gurumurthy? Do we even need a Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP, a.k.a. BJP Tamilnadu? Why I feel Annamalai will not be replaced as TN State President! K.Annamalai There are rumors floating around that Annamalai is getting replaced. The entire BJP support system is in panic mode since yesterday raising its concerns. Here are my thoughts! Firstly, there is immense political equity built around ‘Brand Annamalai’ as BJP is invested big time in him. Otherwise, En Mann En Makkal would never have happened. Amit Shah inaugurated it and PM Modi concluded it. That is a HUGE acknowledgment of the kind of political dividends they expect from Annamalai in future. Secondly, PM Modi likes Annamalai as he compares Annamalai to himself. A young, bold and daring political personality. That is why, even when BJP did not win a single seat, PM Modi applauded Annamalai in the Parliament Central Hall, by saying, ‘BJP has grown in Tamil Nadu’. Amit Shah may have a differing opinion on Annamalai, but PM Modi’s word is FINAL. Annamalai has also become flexible and accommodative based on his recent interviews. Thirdly, Modi - Amit Shah duo knows that Annamalai has by far been the best state president in TN. He has single handedly transcended the party from NOTA challenger to a game changer. They do understand and acknowledge Annamalai’s achievements that are unmatched as below! Annamalai single handedly achieved BJP’s growth of 207.1% in 5 years from 2019 to 2024. The highest by any party in this time frame! Annamalai made BJP contest in 19 seats. Highest ever! Annamalai made BJP get 12% votes. Highest ever! Annamalai made BJP get double digit votes. First time ever! Finally, Modi Amit Shah duo knows more than anyone that, for the above reasons, it will he sheer stupidity to replace Annamalai. Because 80% of BJP supporters in Tamil Nadu are Annamalai supporters and there is no BJP in Tamil Nadu without Annamalai. They know, if this happens, the incoming president will take BJP back to ‘I am going to scratch the surface’ scenario. Annamalai has a tremendous role to play in 2026 and I feel he will be left uninhibited! These are my thoughts! But if the opposite happens and if Annamalai is replaced, it will be political suicide for BJP and the party will get buried for good in Tamil Nadu. Even BJP supporters will ditch and disown the party. PM Modi and HM Shah are too smart to give such details a miss just to form an alliance for short term dividends! And then, EPS takes it on himself to say it will be an ADMK government and not a coalition government. He doesn’t even know that he is the loser without an alliance. And when asked about it, Nainar parries the question just like how any Dravidian politician would. If the same question had been posed to Annamalai, he would ROARED EMPHATICALLY that the NEXT NDA government will be a coalition government, and we WONT compromise whatsoever. Once again, he showed why he’s different from the rest of Tamil Nadu’s political crowd. While the DMK is busy twisting and politicizing every part of the Karur tragedy, Annamalai chose to rise above it all. He kept it simple, real, and human, reminding everyone that compassion doesn’t need a political tag. Like Annamalai said, you need permission to use public land, but you don’t need anyone’s approval to offer condolences to a grieving family. Straight facts without drama and mere intellectual honesty, something that’s become so rare in today's politics. This is what real leadership should be, calm, clear, and courageous.
