Last week near Crown Hill Lake, our deputies showed exactly what it means to step up. They arrived to a grass fire and did not wait around for someone else to handle it. They jumped into action, grabbed fire extinguishers from their vehicles, and stopped the fire from spreading. West Metro Fire Rescue arrived shortly after and took over, and we are grateful for their fast response and expertise. Today we share our gratitude for first responders and their families. Their hard work and sacrifice keeps us all safe. Last night, #DCSO patrol deputies demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork, and coordination in recovering a stolen vehicle and apprehending two suspects. The driver tried to get away, but was caught after a short pursuit that ended on Castle Pines Parkway and I25. No one was injured. You really don’t know what a day on patrol will bring at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. 🦘🚓 DCSO deputies recently responded to a call no one had on their bingo card—a kangaroo on the run in a Highlands Ranch neighborhood. Turns out the suspect was Charlie the Wallaby, who is very much a real wallaby and very well known (yes, he has his own Instagram). Everyone was safe, Charlie made his way home, and the story immediately became one for the books. As one of our sergeants put it: “I’m not going to lie, this is going to be the highlight of my year…” From routine calls to the unexpected (and occasionally adorable), our deputies are always ready—no matter what hops their way. 💙

This could have been much worse. Last night around 8:20 p.m., JCSO deputies responded to a reported fire on Meyers Gulch Road. Multiple callers reported smoke and flames, with flames reaching approximately 20 feet. When deputies arrived, they found a shed on fire very close to a home. Deputies confirmed no one was inside the home, then used fire extinguishers and dirt to slow the fire and keep it from spreading to the house until Evergreen Fire arrived. Evergreen Fire took over and fully extinguished the fire. The cause remains under investigation. Thank you to the residents who called this in quickly, our deputies who acted fast, and Evergreen Fire for getting this fire out before it became something far worse. Evergreen Fire/Rescue

Quick thinking #DCSO deputies catch another auto theft suspect. On Monday night, patrol deputies responded to a report of an in-progress vehicle theft on Mill Vista Road in Highlands Ranch. Responding deputies quickly established a perimeter and began searching the area. The vehicle was located, occupied, in a parking garage on Mill Vista Road. Upon observing law enforcement in the area, the suspect vehicle attempted to back out of a parking space. The deputy activated the patrol vehicle's emergency lights and pulled forward to signal the suspect to stop. The suspect vehicle accelerated forward, scraping, and colliding with the front passenger side push bumper of the patrol vehicle. The vehicle ran a stop sign and sped away. Deputies pursued the vehicle for a short distance, and the suspect vehicle spun out of control and rolled backwards into a metal railing, where it was pinned in place by deputies. The suspect, later identified as Armon Chism (DOB: 05/15/1982), of Denver, fled from the vehicle, and a short foot pursuit was initiated by pursuing deputies. The suspect was placed into custody after a successful taser deployment. While conducting their investigation, deputies were able to establish probable cause that Chism was a suspect in an earlier vehicle pursuit of a stolen Hyundai Tucson at the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and County Line Road. Chism was found to be in possession of the stolen Hyundai ignition key and the vehicle was recovered nearby. Chism was booked into the Douglas County Jail for investigation of Motor Vehicle Theft, Vehicular Eluding, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Fentanyl), Protection Order Violation, and Criminal Impersonation. Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said, “We will not allow criminals to victimize Douglas County residents. We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of our community will continue to work tirelessly to protect our residents and their property. I am so proud of my deputies who responded quickly and didn’t give up until this suspect was in custody.”

Douglas County Deputies Assist in DUI Pursuit with Successful Grappler Deployment In the early hours of October 4, 2025, at approximately 4:22 A.M., Douglas County Deputies responded to assist the Aurora Police Department in pursuit of a suspected DUI driver traveling westbound on E-470, passing Gartrell Road. Douglas County deputies responded immediately and set up two sets of stop sticks along E-470 in an attempt to bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion. Despite these efforts, the suspect vehicle continued westbound. A Douglas County Deputy, operating a patrol vehicle equipped with the Grappler device, joined the pursuit along with another deputy. After positioning behind the suspect, both maneuvered to the front of the pursuit. The suspect vehicle, which struck the concrete barrier multiple times, was ultimately stopped when our deputy successfully deployed the Grappler just west of South Quebec Street. The vehicle was brought to an immediate and controlled stop. The suspect was compliant and taken into custody by Aurora Police without incident. Sheriff Weekly said, “I am proud of the seamless coordination between our deputies and our partners at APD. This incident highlights the power of innovative tools like the Grappler. By effectively deploying cutting-edge technology, we’re able to bring dangerous situations to a safe conclusion while minimizing risk to the public. The Dallas Police Department’s new Drone as First Responder program officially launched today with eight remotely piloted drones based at Dallas Fire-Rescue stations across the City of Dallas. These drones are operated out of the Fusion/Real Time Crime Center and are designed to respond to calls for service in a two-mile radius from their base station. The base locations were selected based on heat maps of calls for service for both police and fire, placing them where they can potentially respond to the greatest number of calls. The pilots will be able to get to the scene quicker than in a squad car and begin to provide real-time intelligence and feedback to officers, as well as reduce the level of response or clear a call entirely if the incident has resolved. If a pilot sees a call in a drone’s response area where aerial intelligence can enhance officer safety, they can deploy a drone to provide critical updates to officers at the scene. Each drone is equipped with a thermal camera to help during nighttime operations, as well as a loudspeaker to make announcements to individuals on the ground. “I challenged our team to find innovative ways to continue improving our response times, and this new drone unit will not only keep officers free to respond to more calls, but provide real time updates as they are responding to calls,” said Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. “Even during our training, our pilots were able to clear three holding calls in an hour with one drone. That alone proved their value to us, and I’m looking forward to seeing the benefits in both officer safety and response times.” Our public safety partners at Dallas Fire-Rescue will also be utilizing the Drone as First Responder program, with training for pilots underway. Under the new program, in the event of a reported structure fire, a drone will be dispatched to the scene ahead of arriving apparatus. This will be the last update from the Northern Utah Type 3 Incident Management Team for the #Widemouth2Fire. The NUIMT Incident Commander trainee Lucas Yeamans said it best at tonight's meeting "We were fully supported here. Especially dealing with incidents like this, we empathize with you. We did the best we could to minimize the impact to you and have genuine concern for you. This community is as unique as this fire. The experience we had here isn’t what we experience every fire we go to. Your elected officials, your community leaders, your Sheriff's department, your local fire department, your state and county resources, your federal land management leaders, have all been amazing. It has been incredibly impressive to see how they work together, to see their commitment, and to see their effort. You can see their concern and their dedication. And, on behalf of the NUIMT, we were proud to be a part of that effort. We applaud you for having such a strong community, with such great leaders. We were honored to serve you, and want to say thank you." Aug 3, Fire behavior update: As of this evening the #Widemouth2Fire crews have made great progress holding the fire outside the communities of Kanosh, Meadow, and Fillmore. The western edge of the fire near Kanosh has minimal heat within most of the interior of the fire. Everything from Kanosh to Meadow is holding well. Crews will continue to secure this perimeter to get residents back in as quickly as possible. From Meadow to Fillmore, there is some heat within the line. This area experienced some spotting, but firefighters were able to catch them all thus far. From Chalk Creek Canyon and east, crews were able to construct dozer line and laid retardant line to enhance the efforts, and were able to hold the fire in the canyon. The east side is growing too quickly to go direct. Firefighters spent the day scouting and doing structure protection. Another focus was establishing safety zones and escape routes. But were unable to directly engage because of the pace of the fire. This evening the fire did reach Sevier County in its push eastward. The southwest corner experienced spotting due to northwest winds. Crews were able to pick them up and stop forward progression of the spots. Southwest of Kanosh, firefighters worked diligently to hold the current perimeter. Once the fire hit the ridge, it made a quick run. This will be the last update from the Northern Utah Type 3 Incident Management Team for the #Widemouth2Fire. The NUIMT Incident Commander trainee Lucas Yeamans said it best at tonight's meeting "We were fully supported here. Especially dealing with incidents like this, we empathize with you. We did the best we could to minimize the impact to you and have genuine concern for you. This community is as unique as this fire. The experience we had here isn’t what we experience every fire we go to. Your elected officials, your community leaders, your Sheriff's department, your local fire department, your state and county resources, your federal land management leaders, have all been amazing. It has been incredibly impressive to see how they work together, to see their commitment, and to see their effort. You can see their concern and their dedication. And, on behalf of the NUIMT, we were proud to be a part of that effort. We applaud you for having such a strong community, with such great leaders. We were honored to serve you, and want to say thank you." Aug 3, Fire behavior update: As of this evening the #Widemouth2Fire crews have made great progress holding the fire outside the communities of Kanosh, Meadow, and Fillmore. The western edge of the fire near Kanosh has minimal heat within most of the interior of the fire. Everything from Kanosh to Meadow is holding well. Crews will continue to secure this perimeter to get residents back in as quickly as possible. From Meadow to Fillmore, there is some heat within the line. This area experienced some spotting, but firefighters were able to catch them all thus far. From Chalk Creek Canyon and east, crews were able to construct dozer line and laid retardant line to enhance the efforts, and were able to hold the fire in the canyon. The east side is growing too quickly to go direct. Firefighters spent the day scouting and doing structure protection. Another focus was establishing safety zones and escape routes. But were unable to directly engage because of the pace of the fire. This evening the fire did reach Sevier County in its push eastward. The southwest corner experienced spotting due to northwest winds. Crews were able to pick them up and stop forward progression of the spots. Southwest of Kanosh, firefighters worked diligently to hold the current perimeter. Once the fire hit the ridge, it made a quick run. When deputies, or anyone, are stopped on the side of the road, they’re in harm’s way. Slowing down and moving over isn’t just common sense for keeping people safe, it’s the law. “Our deputies are honored to stand alongside the Colorado State Patrol in remembering Trooper Cody Donahue,” said Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly. “Being part of this operation isn’t just about enforcing the law; it’s about protecting the men and women who serve on our roadways every day. When drivers move over and slow down, they help ensure that tragedies like the one that took Trooper Donahue’s life are never repeated. We owe it to him, his family, and every roadside worker to keep safety at the forefront.” The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Colorado State Patrol, will be conducting extra traffic enforcement in Douglas County on November 26, 2025. This enforcement effort is in remembrance of Trooper Cody Donahue, Colorado State Patrol, who was tragically struck and killed in the line of duty while investigating a motor vehicle crash on I-25. The goal of this operation is to reinforce safe driving habits, ensure compliance with traffic laws, and remind motorists of the importance of the Slow Down, Move Over Law.
