That was the 1984 Summer Olympics, not 1986. And your commute was never close. The Bell Rocket Belt's best numbers in testing were 21 seconds of flight and 120 metres of range. Those were maximums achieved, not a typical flight.

We do have better jetpack technology. You just saw it. The US and UK have even better ones. Those packs from the 70s and 80s were basically just dumb pressure-fed RCS thrusters with hydrogen peroxide and platinum. Literally 1940s rocket technology in a funny shape.

Militaries have it. We get the technology decades later once they have something to counter it as a threat.

We instead chose to babysit the third world.

We don't have good power storage. That's literally the chokepoint of so many technologies. Combustibles are super energy dense, but a man can carry only so much on his back. Electrical would be great, but our battery technology hasn't had a major breakthrough since lithium ion. A 50 pound battery wouldn't even have enough juice to really do much. Still, the Navy (US and UK) uses them for ship to ship boarding. Short range only.

Imagine how advanced we'd be if we hadn't spent the last 60 years trying to tard-wrangle nons and instead just sent them back to the dark contient and left them well alone.
