May 3, 2026 🌪️ Today marks the 27th anniversary of the Bridge Creek–Moore F5 tornado. At its peak, a mobile Doppler radar (Doppler on Wheels) measured a wind speed of 318 mph, the strongest ever recorded in a tornado. This killer storm carved a 38 mile path of destruction through the heart of Oklahoma, part of a historic outbreak of 70+ tornadoes. 27 years later, the impact of this outbreak is still felt across Oklahoma. NHC says: “Based on a blend of the satellite estimates, flight-level wind and dropsonde data, and the fact that the area of strongest winds was likely not sampled by reconnaissance aircraft, Melissa’s peak intensity is estimated to be 165 kt at 1200 UTC 28 October. The dropsonde that measured a mean wind of 188 kt in the lowest 150 m, recorded an instantaneous peak wind of 219 kt (representative of a wind gust) at an altitude of 906 mb, which is the strongest wind ever recorded by a dropsonde in a tropical cyclone”

A powerful tornado was seen spinning near Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma, forcing it to close on Thursday. Video shows the massive size of the twister as it moved across Enid, a city of about 50,000 people in Garfield County near the state's northern border. The tornado ripped roofs off buildings and knocked down power poles. There were no immediate reports of fatalities and only minor injuries hours after the tornado passed through, according to the Garfield County Sheriff's Office.
