Well, yes and no. The “battery” power driving a tropical cyclone comes from the warm surface ocean, and over land there’s no battery any more. Still, it did run out of juice rather fast compared to other storms.

In all of recorded history, no storm that was named as far east in the Pacific Ocean as Dolphin was went on to make landfall at Typhoon strength in mainland China like this. She is officially an unprecedented storm of the satellite era.

Notice on radar the abundance of tornadic supercells in the western semicircle of the storm...this is quite unusual for a Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclone, as they're usually found in the eastern semicircle.

🚨LANDFALL: Titanic Typhoon Fung-wong (UwanPH) has collided into the Philippines shortly after reaching a CATEGORY 4 peak intensity, with her enormous eye moving onshore in the Baler Bay Area of Aurora. Violent waves and significant storm surge flooding are being reported near the landfall location as the powerful, eastern half of Fung-wong’s eyewall is now moments away from roaring into Luzon. This is very close to where Typhoon Man-yi (Pepito) made landfall in November of last year.
