Another classic turns 40 this year: Bubble Bobble (Taito), created by Fukio Mitsuji. I played this first at the arcades, then later on my C64 and Amiga. The ports were brilliant and came quite close to the original arcade version. Great in single-player, even better in two-player mode. 99 levels (plus one final boss level), with hidden bonus levels, an iconic soundtrack, the cutest player characters (even the enemies looked adorable), Bubble Bobble was super addictive right from the start. Every so often I walk along my shelves and pick an old game (old as in 35+ years) and give it another go. Some have aged badly. Bubble Bobble is a great example of a timeless game. It's still fun today, especially when you play it with a friend.

The arcade version was absolutely brilliant, being one of the first games to have a coop-multiplayer option. It was also one of the the most ported arcade games in history, with over 20 ports to home computers and consoles, including even the legendary TI-84 Plus (primarily a calculator). The port that got the highest praise and came closest to the original arcade experience was the C64 version. Excellent graphics, one of the most recognizable tunes , and great gameplay make Bubble Bobble a timeless classic. My brother and I played the crap out of this one back in the day, and we still load it up on my old C64 when he comes for a visit. It's like riding a bike, you never forget how to play Bubble Bobble.

One of the few games I managed to finish (in 2 player mode with my brother) without using unlimited lives: Silkworm It's a classic horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Tecmo for arcades in 1988. You control either a heli (player 1) or a jeep (player 2) as they blast through enemy territory. And "blast" in the very sense of the word - great sound effects, epic explosions, and non-stop action. The helicopter offers free movement in the air, while the jeep drives on the ground, can jump over obstacles like mines, and has a turret that rotates to shoot in a 180 degree angle. Originally an arcade game, it was later ported to home computers like the Amiga (as in the video) and consoles. To me still one of the best games ever for the Amiga, and still playing it these days when my brother comes for a visit.

minghao talked about the rainbow he saw 🌈 🐸 seeing the rainbow was the best thing. i saw it in the sky while driving. it’s the biggest rainbow i’ve ever seen in my life. i mostly only see it in this [small] size but that was enormous so i was continuously chasing the rainbow. i saw the map and saw that there’s a coastline nearby and decided to go. that’s how i filmed the video of me running. and when i looked at it, i felt “wow~ that’s so beautiful” in that moment. the comfort and strength that nature gives me makes me comforted to the point that i’m speechless. it felt so good. i was there for 30 minutes. it started to rain suddenly. i got rained on and felt “wow~ this is nice~”. i certainly like nature. there’s not much opportunities for me to feel nature when i’m working as i don’t had much free time. so our carats, despite you living your lives busily, whenever you rest, or during times between your work, take a look at the sky for a while, feel the wind blowing, feel the sun setting. it will give you a form of comfort in that moment.

In the last 6 weeks two of the best and most loyal friends I have ever had have left this earth. 1st Delta Dawn. She was one of those dogs that you only get once in a lifetime. I found her at a Sonic in Oklahoma in the spring of 2009. She was homeless and hungry but still full of personality. She crossed over the rainbow bridge and left this earth on April 22 , 2024. And it happened to be earth Day. I want yall to know that I’m an advocate for rescue because I live it out and everyday I am blessed with the joy of having these animals in my life. And then some days, like today, I’m so heartbroken to have lost them. To love this big you have to hurt just as big. They are worth it. Shelters all over the country are suffering from over crowdedness so this is my heart song to you. Consider a rescue or fostering or volunteering . You never know what blessing is waiting there for you. 💖🐶Delta Dawn

A while ago, I posted about games that looked great but had terrible gameplay/controls. The one that stuck with me was Dragon's Lair, but there were so many more mentioned in the comments that I had totally forgotten about. Today, I want to turn the question around - games that looked rather basic (or even poor) but had incredible gameplay. So, basically the polar opposite of Dragon's Lair. The choice for me was rather easy: M.U.L.E. (Ozark Softscape, 1983). Back then the graphics were ok but nothing to write home about. However, the reason why this game still has such a cult following and so many fans today - over 40 years later - is its gameplay. I never had more fun in a multi-player game. The land grabing, the auction system, supply and demand principles, and the many last second buy/sell antics have lost none of their charm. It's a game that aged beautifully because the concept and gameplay are as good today as they were back then. If you had to pick a game that ranks rather low in terms of presentation but fascinated you for its gameplay, which one would that be?

One of the best turn based strategy games of the pre-2000 ear that I ever played was Heroes of Might and Magic II (New World Computing, 1996). I lost count of how many times I finished the campaign, over and over again. Pretty much everything about this game is brilliant. The concept, the flow of the game, the graphics (very vibrant and colourful), the soundtrack (simply wonderful), the little RPG elements for your heroes, finding artefacts, the battle system, and the spells. I could go on, but I am sure anyone who played this feels pretty much the same. It's exactly the type of game I would pay money for to replay in a modern setting, with a map editor and the ability to add different units and attributes to each. The Heroes of Might and Magic series is one of the best ever, and I still always come back to number II.
