Beach-Head, published in 1983 by Access Software, is one of the hardest C64 games I have ever played. I was 8 when I first gave it a shot, so maybe that was part of the reason but even in my teenage years I still struggled to get to that final mega-bunker/fortress monstrosity at the end. It was extremely successful back in the day, selling around 250,000 copies, an excellent number for the early 80s, and especially for being one the first games from Access Software. The same programmer (Bruce Carver) went on to also make Raid over Moscow one year later, another classic of 80s gaming history - and one that was equally hard (especially that damn hangar!). I think in terms of design and gameplay you can see how they are related.

Any fans of this masterpiece? One of the few games I managed to finish (in 2 player mode with my brother) without using unlimited lives: Silkworm It's a classic horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Tecmo for arcades in 1988. You control either a heli (player 1) or a jeep (player 2) as they blast through enemy territory. And "blast" in the very sense of the word - great sound effects, epic explosions, and non-stop action. The helicopter offers free movement in the air, while the jeep drives on the ground, can jump over obstacles like mines, and has a turret that rotates to shoot in a 180 degree angle. Originally an arcade game, it was later ported to home computers like the Amiga (as in the video) and consoles. To me still one of the best games ever for the Amiga, and still playing it these days when my brother comes for a visit.

Among all the PlayStation consoles ever released, the PS one was the simplest and cutest. It was a late, budget version of the original PlayStation, and there was even a combo model with an attached LCD monitor. A car adapter was also released, allowing you to play it on the go.

R-Type was famous for its stunning graphics and was one of the most impressive shoot ’em ups of its time. Most people know the PC Engine port, but it was also released on the much less capable MSX hardware. Back then, when the hardware gap was too large, developers often had to heavily rearrange the game to make it work. However, the MSX version really stands out for its effort to stay as faithful to the arcade original as possible.

One of Sega’s greatest strengths in the 1990s was its ability to create arcade games using 3D hardware that completely outclassed the competition. Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter were developed on the Model 1 arcade system, which was based on advanced 3D technology originally developed for military applications. At the time, their performance was so impressive that other 3D games simply couldn’t compare. Because of that, it was extremely difficult to accurately reproduce these games on home consoles. In the early 1990s, the Model 1 arcade hardware cost close to $7,000, and even Sega’s own systems—the Mega Drive, 32X, and later the Sega Saturn—struggled to deliver arcade-perfect versions. Back then, I was disappointed by the gap in quality between the arcade and home versions. Looking back now, though, it’s amazing that Sega managed to port them as well as they did. It almost feels like a miracle. After eventually buying an arcade cabinet and a Model 1 board, I learned something I hadn’t realized before: Model 1 supported high-resolution monitors, unlike the standard displays used by most home systems. In those days, the average gamer didn’t even think about screen resolution, so seeing Virtua Fighter on a high-resolution arcade monitor created a fundamentally different experience from the home versions. When I first played Virtua Fighter on the Sega Saturn, I remember feeling that something was missing. At the time, I assumed it was simply the lower polygon count, but after seeing the original hardware in action, I realized that the difference in resolution also played a huge role. Exactly 40 years ago today, on February 28, 1986, Uridium (by Andrew Braybrook) was released. So, happy 40th birthday! I played it obsessively on the C64. My brother and I would take turns, always trying to reach the next level to see what it would be called. There were 15 levels, each named after a real or fictional metal or alloy, and the massive spaceship in the background changed colour for each one. The graphics were mind-blowing to me, especially on the C64. The scrolling was incredibly smooth, the controls excellent, and the sound effects brilliant. The little mini-bonus game between stages was fun too. I also remember that it was tough as nails but never felt unfair, a really fine line. It won multiple Game of the Year awards, and rightly so.

I naturally expected it to be ported to home consoles and waited for it, but in the end, it never came out on any console. Interestingly, though, it was ported to PC. The X68000 was one of the best home computers for enjoying classic Konami and Capcom arcade games. Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. Virtua Fighter is one of the greatest games of my life. When I was a kid, one of the items on my bucket list was to have an original Virtua Fighter arcade machine at home. As I got deeper into collecting arcade games, I eventually acquired the Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3 boards that powered the Virtua Fighter series. Unlike most arcade hardware, these systems are incredibly large and complex, which made it difficult to enjoy them properly. I’m probably the only crazy person in the world who would build something like this. 😆 I always wanted to create a setup that would let me use them more conveniently, and after years of planning, I finally built a Model board selector. Out of all the custom projects I’ve made, this is the one I’m most attached to, and it’s also the one I use the most. A lot of people ask how I built it or whether I’d be willing to sell one, but it’s extremely complicated to make and surprisingly expensive. Because of that, I’ve only ever built a single unit. I’m probably the only crazy person in the world who would build something like this.

It was incredibly fun, and with support for up to four players, it was one of the best games to enjoy with friends. But did you know this? While the game was a huge hit in South Korea, it received a fairly lukewarm response in Japan and was released in very limited numbers in North America, making it virtually unknown there. Pretty strange, isn’t it? One of the reasons I loved this game was that, unlike most Irem titles, it wasn’t brutally difficult. You could have a great time with just a single credit. Most Irem games were known for their gritty atmosphere, incredibly detailed pixel art, and punishing difficulty. This one, however, stood out with its bright colors and cute, round character designs, giving it a completely different feel. If you’ve never played it before, do yourself a favor and try it on an emulator.

Released by Tecmo in 1988, Silkworm puts you in control of either a helicopter (player 1) or a jeep (player 2) as you blast your way through enemy lines. And when I say “blast through,” I mean it - the game had fantastic sound effects, massive explosions, and pure non-stop action from start to finish. The helicopter gives you full freedom to fly anywhere on screen, while the jeep stays grounded, lets you jump over mines and obstacles, and has a pretty neat rotating turret that can fire in a full 180-degree arc, which needed a bit of skill to use. The co-op dynamic between the two vehicles is pure perfection. Originally an arcade hit, it was later ported to several home systems, including the Amiga (the version shown in the video), where it remains, in my opinion, one of the best games ever released for the platform. Even today, whenever my brother comes over, we still fire it up and play through it again. An absolute classic.

With its simple mechanics and relatively reduced scope, it was possible to adequately fit in the extremely tight deadlines of the computer niche, and coupled with the technical skill of the Ocean France development team, delivering a compelling result. Not only on the Amiga, but also on other classic computers of the era.
