Aviation warning balls, essential visibility markers, are typically positioned along power lines to enhance the visibility of conductor crossings to flight paths. Placed strategically near airstrips, water bodies, roads, and railways, these huge spherical balls, weighing approximately 7kg each, play a crucial role in ensuring aviation safety and protecting electrical infrastructure. Additionally, they serve as deterrents to birds, minimising the risk of avian interference with the power lines. Recently, heavy rainfall waterlogged warning balls on power lines, affecting our GSU to Magadi 66kV line. This saturation increased the conductor's weight so much that it reduced the allowed clearance between the 66 kV phase-to-phase conductors and ultimately caused power interruption to our customers in Magadi, Kajiado County. Never brake-check, chase, or try to teach another motorist a lesson, as this can escalate the situation. Rather create distance by slowing down safely, changing lanes when possible, or allowing the aggressive driver to pass. Keep your doors locked and windows up if someone appears threatening. If a driver targets or follows you, do not stop on the roadside. Instead, drive to a busy public place such as a petrol station, shopping centre or South African Police Service station, and call for help if necessary.
