Rangers: Defending & Dujon Decisions It is the first game of the season and if this was an isolated lack of concentration, it wouldn't even have been analysed in this way. Dujon Sterling, in this goal, made a lot of similar missteps to the Motherwell goal last season: > Decision-Making to Jump Early > Late to Identify Real Risk > Fernandez Press & Back-4 Can't Narrow > Recovery Run is Not Quick Enough My main concern is this is very basic defensive principles, it is nothing that every coach won't demand & it's lapses in concentration/desire that we have seen season on season. Players are now facing an issue that this is a Manager we all wanted and now responsibility will sit with them majorly.

Football is the most complex sport that has many rules that the majority of fans (or sometimes even commentators) don't fully understand. I've seen a lot of misinformation and confusion last night and today regarding what an eligible receiver is and what intentional grounding is. What is intentional grounding? (see the 1st picture) If the ball is thrown to the vicinity of an eligible receiver, there is no penalty. So the next question is what makes someone an eligible receiver? (see the 2nd picture): - Anyone off the Line of Scrimmage - The farthest man to the left of the players on the L.O.S. - The farthest man to the right of the players on the L.O.S. The offense must have at least 7 players on the L.O.S. (so they cannot have more than 4 off the L.O.S.). Therefore, there are usually 6 eligible receivers in any given play (the 4 players off the L.O.S. plus the farthest man on the L.O.S. to the left and to the right). Yes, the Quarterback is an eligible player. On the Lions backed up play, Goff throws the ball toward (and in the vicinity of) two eligible players. Debate all you want about his Tight End being in the vicinity, but his RB is right in front of him and the ball almost hits him. A player running a route or blocking has absolutely nothing to do with whether he's eligible or not. There is clearly no Grounding on that play. In the 3rd Quarter, the Vikings get called for Grounding simply because there's no eligible player within 10 yards of where the ball lands. These are pretty clear cut plays.

Pressing, transitions and goals in Canada! After the hiring of Jesse Marsch this week by Canada Soccer , there has been lots of talk about pressing and transitions in the football community. This is THE style of play that we have used for the last 5 years with Alliance United FC in @L1OMens and will give you some insight in how this can look. We went away from the 'possession' based 1-4-3-3 that everyone has been using as the 'best way' to develop players and win games. Many say this is the 'right way' of playing. However, we use the players' abilities and inabilities as the starting point and based on players produced in Canada, within our youth system, this is the way we think will get us the best results and help our players get to the next level. You need to understand youth development in our country to understand what is and what is not being taught to young players. This is not a negative outlook, it is just looking at the reality. Many mistake this style of play as just non-stop pressing and chaos. Yes, these two aspects are important but it is a much more deliberate and planned way of playing that is used to predict where the opposition will play the ball, where the ball can be dictated and what areas the opposition leave open for transitions when they attack. In 2019, I was introduced to Ernst Tanner former Academy Director of Red Bull Salzburg and current Philadelphia Union Sporting Director that has led the club to being one of the top clubs in MLS and arguably the best academies in North America the last few years. Both organisations are known for their pressing and fast transitions in addition to producing top players. He became a mentor to me and gave me insights and education on this style of play. He has changed the way I look at football. Every season we try to recruit players that can play this style that I will describe below and we do not waiver in the way we played. Every game since 2019 Alliance United FC have played either in a 1-4-2-2-2 or a 1-4-4-2 midfield diamond....every game. We have no secrets in how we play. We focus on defending, pressing, forcing teams into mistakes and transition football. It is important to understand that we do not care how much possession we have and we actually want the opposition to have the ball most of the time. Stats in football show that only when a team has the ball 70% or more in a match their is a correlation to winning. Anything less is not correlated to winning in a certain match. In addition, 80% of goals are scored under 5 passes or less and under 10 seconds when regaining possession. We follow the trend! So, here are some important points based on the video: a) Pressing higher up the pitch when possible. All 11 players are committed to the team intention (principles) and if anybody is not committed and does not contribute to this style of play, they do not play. There is no leeway on this. Either you are in 100% in or you are not. All it takes is one player to not commit and the plan will not work. If we do not win the ball on the high press, everyone is to drop behind the ball as fast as possible to restart the press closer to our goal. b) Based on the opponent's scouting we press certain players and decide if will press closer to the sideline and 'pin' the player to the sideline or we dictate the passes and dribbles centrally and 'surround' the player to win the ball in central positions. We also decide if we will sometimes drop lower for the opposition to advance so we can play behind them when winning the ball. This is done if we scout that the opposition centre-backs are slower than our two strikers. This means we will 'outrun' them in the space they leave behind. c) When winning the ball we want to exploit space behind their backline as the priority which means that a player(s) need to be passing options behind the backline and preferably centrally which is closer to the goal, players winning the ball has to look to play the ball to the player furthest up the pitch. Possession is not a priority but scoring goals as fast as possible is. d) When winning the ball we stay as central as possible with passes and dribbling. We use the width of the penalty area (44 yards) as the preferable dimension when transitioning. We want to stay within this width. The wider the team plays the ball, the more time the opposition has to block the middle. PLAY AS VERTICALLY AS POSSIBLE! The emphasis is to get the ball to the two strikers and play 1v1 against the CBs. e) We know that most youth players grow up playing against a 1-4-3-3 which means there is one central striker meaning the centre-backs one back press and one can cover. Against 2 strikers this is not possible and many centre-backs do not have the ability to play 1v1 with space behind them. They are not taught the cues to step and press or drop to protect space behind them. They are never taught at youth level. We exploit this deficiency. e) All 11 players must get up the pitch to close the spaces if we lose the ball from our attacking transition so the opposition cannot transition against us and we can counter-press. f) A goal is the best outcome based on the objective of attacking but at the minimum we want to get a shot on goal from a transition. This is a quick overview of a different way of playing football that Canada will see with the Men's National Team.

If Enzo Fernandez played like this every week, I would never have an issue with him. The way he ran, competed, won the ball, on top in duels, and then got a goal too. Unfortunately just doesn't have it in him to do this in English football consistently.

This World Cup has shown how Argentinian players are just built different, and it was interesting because, in the press conferences, both managers addressed this. First, Tuchel talks about the Argentinian value of the ball and how they protect the ball at all costs, how they manage those small spaces, and how they learn this from a young age. He references culture, and this is exactly it. A child playing in a certain environment leads to that. Not every Argentinian child is on the national team, but it raises the ceiling. It creates a certain type of style and a certain type of player. Then Scaloni also references his culture. He sees them play without fear of losing. It comes from playing in an environment where you are constantly faced with the potential of losing and being able to play with that pressure, right? They don’t fight against it. They play with it. They use it. And I think this is where youth football coaches should really take note. This does not mean we should copy and paste Argentinian culture into every training environment, because culture cannot just be copied. But the values within that culture can be inculcated in every training environment. The value of the ball. The courage to receive it in small spaces. The ability to protect it under pressure. The confidence to keep playing after a mistake. The willingness to play with the possibility of losing rather than constantly trying to avoid it. Those values can become part of the environment we create every day. They can be present in the games we design, in what we praise, in what we allow players to struggle with, and in how we respond when they lose the ball. If every mistake leads to the coach stopping the session, giving the answer, or taking the pressure away, then players never learn to play with that pressure. They learn to wait for the coach. It was cool to see how two managers, at such a big stage, reference culture and the environments that kids play in when they’re young. Because the players we see on the biggest stage were not only created by tactics or coaching information. They were created by environments that taught them what to value, how to relate to the ball, and how to play when there was something to lose.

Celtic Defending Corners 🟢⚪️ The video has graphics with important information, however to expand on this: - Conceded a goal from a corner in each of the last 3 games since Nancy arrived, albeit one was an O.G. - Marking system is very man-to-man orientated. - Markers then outmatched by their opponents both in terms of height and aerial aggressiveness. - Scales and Trusty are both capable in the air but are being dragged out into negligible positions by decoy runs, they'd be more effective attacking the ball from a zonal position in the centre. - No zonal players on the centre of the 6 yard box, where high xG chances are conceded, see the post I wrote about Hearts' goals from corners earlier in the season.

COACHES SOLVING THEIR TEAMS PUZZLE As fans, trainers, parents, players we underestimate how much of a process it is for coaches to figure out their teams puzzle. There are so many variables that go in to a team having success and the only way to get to that end goal is by losing and making mistakes along the way. No team is perfect, no coach is perfect, but give me a coach that is constantly fighting for their team and I’ll rock with them all day!!

Nick Saban has always asked this question about Leadership... "How many guys on the team need to be led?" Coach Saban believed in the power of Collective Leadership with his teams. 1. Are most players on your team bought in? 2. Do most players on your team set a good example? These players do not need someone to impact or influence them if they are already making these choices and leading by example. This is the power of collective leadership. Collective leadership is vital to successful teams. I believe there are 7 types of Collective Leaders that all teams need: 1. The GAMER - When the game is on the line. Who does the team look to? Who wants the ball in their hand? It is the Game Leader. They don't "have" to lead in other ways, but it would be best if they did. This player is often the ultimate competitor on the team. 2. The WORKER - Winning Teams have Practice Leaders. They bring energy and focus to each practice. They ensure competitive and strong practices. They Lead by Example. You practice much more than you play. 3. The GATEKEEPER - This leader ensures the Team Culture is Maintained. They put out the fires. They keep the team accountable. Especially when the coach is not there. They are essential in WINNING Teams. 4. The COMMUNICATOR - It is a long season. There will be difficult days. Teams need the Communicator to get through these tough days. They often provide humor and can lighten the mood. They have high Emotional Intelligence. This is an Underappreciated Leader. 5. The CONNECTOR - These players are often your “glue” players. They keep the team connected on the court or field as well as in the locker room and in social settings. 6. Nick Saban has always asked this question about Leadership... "How many guys on the team need to be led?" Coach Saban believed in the power of Collective Leadership with his teams. 1. Are most players on your team bought in? 2. Do most players on your team set a good example? These players do not need someone to impact or influence them if they are already making these choices and leading by example. This is the power of collective leadership. Rangers v Celtic - Game-Plan No matter your opinions on Clements' Style of Play, there is a game-plan & method to how we approach games. Before we start, it's absolutely not the football style I like watching, I much prefer playing out from the back & breaking through lines to create phased attacks. Rangers Yesterday: - Go Direct with Numbers in the Attack - Collect 2nd Balls in Dangerous Areas - Let Celtic have the Ball & Press on Inverted FB Trigger Jack Butland Distribution ----------------------------- - 27 Long Ball's Yesterday - 5 Were Successful - 3 Were Picked up 2nd Balls and Attacks A Punt in the 2nd Half directly contributed to the Celtic Goal & for me the decision-making is either suspect or the Manager wants us to not play/overplay. Raskin and Diomande are always wanting to show & get on the ball but seem to constantly be ignored. Diomande & The Press --------------------------- Very clear that yesterday Diomande & Raskin were given a dual role: - Man-Mark The Celtic 8s - Jump to Press on Inverted FB - That was the trigger for the goal When it works, it's great but it does demand they both cover 13.5km+ per 90 which seems extreme with midweek demands. Points aren’t the separator… Players are so consumed with how many points they average, and OBVIOUSLY points set the level… you need to be able to score it. But when you dive in to separating players that score the ball at the same rate… it’s about HOW they go about it. How are they impacting the game beyond the scoring? How are they getting their shots, and how many shots are they taking? If players focus on the how, their game becomes more well rounded and efficient 👍👍

Still pondering the ramifications of the bomb changes to gameplay. I am curious about 2 current outcomes since the update. 1HP damage happening no matter where you are on the map. Is this intentional or just an unintended side effect? And if it is intentional, what is the purpose of being condemned to death at 1HP if the bomb detonates no matter how far from the C4 you are. The second being no damage to armour. It is rare that you live long enough to replenish armour, but bomb damage is usually one of the key ways players have their armour unknowingly chipped away at. But again is this an intentional change or just something that has arisen due to the change in the mechanic? I am not concerned with the debate around the indicator for bomb damage range being noobfriendly. This type of conversation has been happening for well over a decade now whenever new features are added. Some people will view it as a quality of life upgrade, others will view it as removing a skill they either have, or believe, should be learnt and not spoonfed by the UI - either way I would prefer to focus on the outcomes of the gameplay.

Rangers: Defensive Disorganisation As an Analyst, working in football, I always try to tow-the-line of being respectful about professional players when covering them but I am also a Rangers fan. What I have watched in the last 4 games is utterly astonishing from Coaching Principles to Player Responsibility: > Man-Marking or Ball-Orientated Defending? > Analysed & Addressed? > Player Reactions & Responsibility? > Player Pride & Work-Rate? I had to put this all in one video to make it even clearer — The NBA has an OKC Thunder problem. The fans know it, broadcasters know it. THEY know they’re favored. When EVERYONE complains about ONE team, it’s serious. It’s not just SGA, he’s just the head of the snake. I’m not a “blame the refs” type, never have been. I actually hate when players focus too much on that. But this just makes for an unbearable product. The Thunder are EXTREMELY good. They don’t need extra help. They don’t need to be rewarded for their antics. A lot of it is an affront to the game. The physicality they play with needs to be allowed both ways or not at all. This is all from one game, but it’s every night against them. It looks and feels blatant. This isn’t basketball. The NBA needs to fix this.

The 1 Drill To Meet All Your Rebounding Needs Some coaches don't believe in doing rebounding drills. They believe they can emphasize rebounding in everything they do without isolating it. I love that in theory. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked that well for me in reality. Coaches like Tom Izzo and Kelvin Sampson seem to agree. Michigan State and Houston are known for being 2 of the best rebounding teams in the country. I don't think it's a coincidence that they prioritize practicing rebounding. If you want your team to be elite on the boards, you must drill it in practice. Here's a versatile and game-like drill from 3v3 Drills For Offense & Defense with Coach Nick LoGalbo that will help your team dominate the glass. Setup: -Position 3 players around the perimeter -3 defensive players are in the paint Instructions: 1. The coach begins by throwing the ball to an offensive player. 2. All of the defenders close out. 3. The player who receives the pass shoots immediately. 4. The defenders must box out and grab the rebound. 5. Play is live until the ball is scored. The rebounding team does not have to take the ball out. Thus, if the defense does a good job boxing out and gathers the rebound close to the rim, they can immediately shoot. This continues until a basket is scored. 6. Each basket is worth 1 point. Play to 5.
