On the other side you have mortarless, precision cut & fitted megalithic multi-tonne walls. Parr Jr. with the 335th Fighter Interceptor Squadron of the 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing was flying an escort mission near Chunggang-jin is his F-86F Sabre (51-12959) when spotted an unidentified transport aircraft traveling unescorted. Parr reportedly made several passes and identified the plane as a North Korean Ilyushin Il-12. Although later that same day the newly signed armistice was to bring an end to hostilities in the Korean War, he decided to attack the aircraft regardless. A long burst from his battery of six .50 caliber machine guns with a combined rate of fire of over 100 rounds per second ripped through the Ilyushin and brought it down in flames. It would later transpire that the aircraft he targeted was in fact a Soviet Navy transport traveling through North Korean airspace from Port Arthur to Vladivostok. The LACMA has long been a great supporter of initiatives in art and technology. From the original Art and Technology Lab, to more recent exhibitions like Coded: Art Enters the Computer Age, 1952–1982, their sustained interest in the development of creative and artistic practices in relation to the rise of computer technology has helped sustain a once controversial yet undeniably fascinating genre of art before it came into public discourse. I am so pleased with the opportunity to highlight an important part of my practice, known as parameterization. By changing one variable in the program, in this case the percentage of pegs to be wrapped by a string, we are able to see how the original artwork, Ringers #962, evolves over the course of 9 frames arranged in a grid. This process is what I call a “parameter sweep” and it’s an honor to present the combined works as the LACMA Iterations. As the artist who coded the algorithm, I had no explicit control over how the artwork would develop, instead relying on randomization and a deep familiarity of the aesthetic form to help guide the output through code.
