More than 60 million Americans live with chronic pain, and many patients who have responsibly used prescribed opioid medications for years are now being rapidly tapered or cut off entirely due to policy pressure, stigma, and regulatory fear. For many people, these medications were the only treatment that allowed them to function, work, and participate in life. Patients with documented illnesses, including cancer, connective tissue disorders, severe spinal conditions, and other debilitating diseases, are increasingly being treated with suspicion rather than care. The consequences are serious: untreated pain, loss of independence, emergency room visits, and tragically, rising rates of despair and suicide within the chronic pain population. Many members of this community have tried to reach your office to share their experiences. We’re not asking for reckless prescribing, we’re asking for balanced, humane pain management policies that allow doctors to treat legitimate patients without fear. Improving the nation’s health includes addressing nutrition, prevention, and chronic disease, but it must also include addressing the millions of Americans currently suffering from uncontrolled pain. We hope you’ll consider giving this issue some attention and listening to the voices of patients who are living through it every day.
