Real-Time Results Upload: Electronic Transmission Was the Only Game-Changer, The Senate Just Killed It What we witnessed yesterday was the gradual killing of Nigeria’s democracy. “We are here to stop the cømmotion Senate President Akpabio wants to create for Nigeria. All we want is the electronic transmission of election results. The reason it was removed is simply because they want to rig the process. Not that rigging is impossible, but electronic transmission makes it much harder.” — Mama Pee, speaking at the ongoing protest in Abuja

Proposed Electronic Transmission Bill Will Enhance Institutional Rigging - Galadima The Senate hasn't made any amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act because they left it as it is. What the Senate did was try to be wise by half, and they thought Nigerians are as unintelligent as they are. If the Electronic Transmission Bill is passed as it is, INEC will be directed to use only Form EC-8A to enhance rigging. We are not taking any electronic transmission bill with a 'but' Buba Galadima, Chieftain of the NNPP

The Senate has not removed any means of transmission. If you want to use a bicycle to carry your votes from one polling unit to the ward centre, do so. If you want to use your phone to transmit, do so. If you want to use your iPad, do so. All we said was that we should remove the word ‘real time,’ because if you say real time and there is grid failure and the network is not working, when you go to court somebody will say it ought to have been real time. That was what we said. We left the burden for INEC to determine the mode of transmission of votes. - Senate President Akpabio insists that the Senate did not remove electronic transmission of election results, clarifying that lawmakers only questioned the requirement for real-time transmission

Electoral Act: What the political class seems to be scared of is the power that electronic transmission of results has. It enhances the transparency of the process and also ensures it has a deterrent effect, because the lowest and perhaps weakest link of our entire results management process is at the collation level. That is where results are manipulated. - Samson Itodo, Executive Director, YIAGA Africa #SundayPolitics

Chief Adewole Adebayo of the SDP issues a stern warning to the National Assembly leadership and Bola Tinubu. "If you don't make electronic transmission of results possible, it means you want an end to this democracy and we will give it to you." "If that amendment doesn't hold, then there will be no elections, and at the termination of your tenure, you will leave the office." "This is because it is what the people want." Please watch.

The bill we passed made it COMPULSORY for INEC to TRANSMIT results REAL-TIME through the IREV. We removed the part of the law that gave INEC the power to use their DISCRETION on that. From what we passed ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION of results is NOW compulsory, no DISCRETION given to INEC anymore — Enyinnaya Abaribe Me: Who is now trying to change what was passed? 🤷

Electronic Transmission of Results: Citizens Have Every Reason To Be Outraged By Senate's Resolution - Ezekwesili The fundamental issue with the review of the Electoral Act is that the Senate retained the INEC 2022 Act, Section 60 Sub 5. This section became infamous for the loophole it provided INEC, causing Nigerians to lose trust. Since the law established that it wasn't mandatory for INEC to transmit electoral results in real-time, there wasn't much anyone could say. Citizens embraced the opportunity to reform the INEC Act, aiming to address ambiguity and discretionary opportunities for INEC. Yet, the Senate handled it with a "let sleeping dogs lie" approach. “We are here, this is the premises of the NASS. We went in, we presented the complain of over 250 million Nigerians. What we are saying is, we must have free & fair elections. Today, we are telling Nigerians that we have submitted their demands. Without e-transmission, there is no trust in the electoral process.” ~Aisha Yesufu & Other protesters submit Electoral Reform Petition to the Senate, demanding mandatory real-time e-transmission of results

The foundation of the American middle class life is broken. Homeownership. Education. Retirement security. Affordable healthcare. All unaffordable and out of reach. The question is: what are we going to do about it?

E-Transmission of Results: Majority of Senate Not in Consonance With Resolution Passed - Nwankwo It's an understatement to say Nigerians are disappointed with the National Assembly's resolution not making real-time electronic transfer of electoral results mandatory; Nigerians are shocked and depressed by that outcome. The Senate leadership delayed and didn't do its part in passing the report from the electoral committee it set up. Interestingly, many senators didn't agree with what was passed. We must ask ourselves how it passed when the majority of senators disagreed with it. Clement Nwankwo, Executive Director, Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre

#WATCH | Delhi | On West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's ‘I will not resign, I did not lose’ statement, CPI General Secretary D Raja says, “…Mamata Banerjee has made it very clear that she has not lost the elections. It is her political conviction, and it is a political battle that she is waging. One has to understand the legal procedure and what the government will do because elections were over and the results were declared… How to challenge the elections? It raises several questions regarding procedure and the power of the Governor. We will have to wait and see.”

Political violence is unacceptable, and we will not tolerate it – not now, not ever. Ideas are won and lost at the ballot box. That is the promise of our democracy, and it is an ideal we need to defend.
