If you're building a PDF RAG pipeline: Should you be using OCR and 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹 methods, or just 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 using late interaction models? This paper says the answer might actually be 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩. My colleagues at Weaviate released IRPAPERS, a benchmark comparing 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 and 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 retrieval over 3,230 pages from 166 scientific papers. The setup: Take the same PDFs and process them two ways. For text, run OCR with GPT-4.1 and embed with Arctic 2.0 + BM25 hybrid search. For images, embed raw page images with ColModernVBERT multi-vector embeddings. Test both on 180 needle-in-the-haystack questions. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: Text edges out images at the top rank: 46% vs 43% Recall@1 But images match or exceed text at deeper recall: 93% vs 91% Recall@20 But text and image based methods actually fail on 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘁 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴. At Recall@1: • 22 queries succeed with text but fail with images • 18 queries succeed with images but fail with text This complementarity is what makes 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 work. Residents of the small San Joaquin Valley city of Avenal, California are furious They voted in April to recall the majority of their city council, but the city council members are refusing to leave office Over 75% of voters approved recalling all four officials. Kings County certified the results in May Voters targeted Mayor Alvaro Preciado and Councilmembers Leticia Gamez, David Reynosa, and Pablo Hernandez. 4 of the 5 council seats The city leaders who are refusing to leave are saying the recall was conducted unlawfully by Kings County Elections instead of the city itself and lacked proper city authorization So they wanted to be able to give authorization for a vote to remove them…. Sure…… I looked into this and verified they should all be removed. Under California law, the recalled Avenal officials should be removed from office California’s recall process is governed by the California Constitution (Article II, Sections 13-19) and the California Elections Code (Division 11, §§ 11000 et seq.). NDP MLA with recall campaign This past weekend, a young teenager in North Vancouver took political activism to a level rarely seen among people his age by organizing a protest and recall campaign targeting B.C. NDP MLA Bowinn Ma. Thirteen-year-old Daniel Thiele organized Saturday's demonstration outside Ma's North Vancouver constituency office, where just under 30 people gathered to hear speeches about frustrations with the NDP government. Ahead of the event, Thiele described the protest as an opportunity for residents to “take back our community” and “let our voices be heard,” while calling on the government to do better on issues including B.C.'s housing crisis, broken promises and a lack of transparency. Thiele, who was only 12-years-old when he first came up with the idea, is now spearheading an effort to recall Ma in North Vancouver-Lonsdale. Recall campaigns allow voters to attempt to remove an MLA from office between elections thus triggering a byelection, but the threshold in B.C. is notoriously difficult to meet. Thiele's campaign says a total of 17,613 valid signatures are required to trigger a recall for Ma’s seat, and no B.C. MLA has ever been successfully removed through the process. Those odds haven't discouraged the young organizer, who says the effort is worthwhile even if only to remind elected officials who they work for. “A recall is not partisan games or personal attacks. A recall is the ultimate safety valve of accountability. It sends a message to every politician in Victoria regardless of their party banner that they work for us. They have to answer to us and if they refuse to represent us we have the constitutional power to remove them,” Thiele told those gathered outside Ma's office.
