Recently asked Coach Roberts about being a “win now” team while still developing younger talent, like Sania Feagin and Ta’Niya Latson: Essentially, the Sparks are focused on pursuing a championship and not development. “I think every team in the league wants to win now,” said Roberts. “But we also... recognize we’re in LA and we’re one of the original franchises. I didn’t come to LA to rebuild or do some slow thing. I know KP [Kelsey Plum] didn’t, and Nneka [Ogwumike] didn’t. Our front office has that in mind as well in terms of getting players that will help us win now, but are also the right fit for what we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to play. I think we’ve done a good job of that. To your point about balancing with the young guys, a lot of the work in developing young players isn’t seen. It’s with our player development staff, our coaching staff; they get coached up a lot. It’s just a hard league to break into, it really is. But we believe in those guys, and we’re going to continue working. Their numbers will get called, and it’s a matter of them staying ready. They’ve done a great job at that, but they’re completely invested. Their work ethic is great, their buy-in is great, so everyone’s journey is different. Jaylen Brown did in fact insinuate Luke Kornet was a potential HOF-er as part of a really great answer about the Celtics’ identity this season: “I want to speak how rare it is to have like 5, 6 new players come in and add to winning right away. It says a lot about our leadership. It says a lot about our coaching staff, because that does not happened in the NBA, and I think that should get talked about more. We lost Luke, Al, Jrue, JT and Porzingis — all potential Hall of Famers, right? And we replaced them with Hugo, Jordan Walsh, Josh Minott, Baylor Scheierman, Anfernee — most of those guys have not played in the league consistently, and for us to be where we're at is just a testament to our leadership, our organization. Mike Dunleavy Jr. on Yaxel Lendeborg’s summer and how he foresees him contributing to the Warriors next season: “Yeah, I think we were really happy to get him on draft night, and we’re even more pleased now with his performance this summer, winning the Summer League, MVP of Summer League. I think he showed everybody why he’s the player we thought he would be. Obviously, that’s a short, short span. It’s a quick, quick couple weeks, and it’s a different level of competition. But I think it’s the beginning of scratching the surface of some things he can do, and we’re hopeful. I don’t want to write it in Sharpie, but we’re hopeful he can have an impact for us as a rookie right away. Inspired: To me, there was never a debate. I knew that I’m always the best, but I think Skewmond is a good player. I wouldn’t say that he had any phenomenal series, though, this tournament. I think he, against T1, he still made a lot of mistakes. When he was stronger, he didn’t really try to fight enemies, and or sometimes just over committed a bit, and I think G2 won against T1 just by waiting for T1 to make mistakes. I think today, I think Skewmond played well in the team fights. I think every time he was on my screen and we’re like skirmishing and team fighting, I think he did a good job. But I think just like team wise, and like how they all played together as a team and use their jungler was wrong. And it’s hard to say, as I always said, that don’t really know who’s there like which jungler is good because you don’t really know what was his idea beyond the game plan, what his teammates wanted to do. But it just seems like they were not connected well enough, and on top of that, as I said, I think the drafts were not that great. For me, coming into the team, I wanted to be respectful of the way they've done things in the past and just to really observe and see where our strengths and where our weaknesses are and to highlight where our weaknesses are and areas that we need to work on. But I do feel that they've been responding. I think you're starting to see, hopefully, some of the impact of the work that we're doing in the background and also into next year's car. This is a car that I've had nothing to do with in terms of developing this car over the years.
