People do this kind of thing when they feel they are experiencing reality at a high frame rate. It does not feel risky to hold a laptop by a corner if you feel like you have an “agency frame” every half second. It feels risky if you have an “agency frame” every 60 seconds. You’d be betting that a hand you do not have control over for 60 seconds will keep gripping. Our conscious frame rate can vary dramatically throughout the day, and it’s hard to perceive the difference because we can only sample ourselves at our conscious frame rate, we can’t oversample ourselves. People drunk drive because they fail to perceive their slower frame rate. Their frame rate feels normal because it matches their sample rate. But we do get a subtle sense of when we’re “switched on”. Everything seems to go easier, everything feels less risky and more easy to correct. A lot of people toward the autistic side of the spectrum are experiencing reality very granularly with a “high agency frame rate”. This is why their social interactions can seem overly forced and awkward, they can be bad at dancing, etc—because they are exerting conscious control over their body and language at very tight intervals—you get a sense that they are extremely “self aware” and not “letting go”. “Letting go” in the social sense is actually about reducing your agency frame rate. That’s why alcohol is good for socializing and bad for driving. With a reduced agency frame rate our speech and body language feels more natural, less forced. More like we are flowing with the social group mind rather than being an island of constant awkward agency.

From International Space Station, we have a unique vantage point to observe lightning storms from directly above them. Much like from the ground, they appear as rapid, intense flashes that are over as quickly as they started. But, with the help of handheld cameras and a bit of practice (and, admittedly, some luck), we can capture these intense flashes with a very high frame rate then slow them down to see how the lightning propagates. It's lightning, in slow motion. This is one that occurred over Indonesia on 6/28. I shot it for a half second at 1/120 frame rate, so, 60 separate frames. I then compiled those frames into two videos: the first, in real-time, and the second, slowed down so that each frame is a half second to highlight the progression of the flash. Note the incredible burst of light in one frame, which includes what is likely a TLE on the upper left. A TLE, or Transient Luminous Event, is an electrical discharge that happens in the upper atmosphere above lightning storms (if you haven’t seen Ferry Farhan TLE photo from last week, head over to her page). As their name implies, these are transient, or short lived, phenomena – it appeared in only one frame of the sequence, lasting for no more than 1/120th of a second. The last photo is that single frame. Absolutely incredible.

Today in Rome, I met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Anthony Albanese. We discussed defense support for Ukraine and cooperation within the Coalition of the Willing. Our conversation also covered the negotiations in Istanbul, increasing pressure on Russia, and which specific sanctions could compel the Russian Federation to stop setting conditions for an unconditional ceasefire. I’m grateful for Australia’s comprehensive support, for the Abrams tanks that are helping our warriors defend Ukraine. It is a good thing that we have allies from different continents. Together we can truly bring the current situation closer to peace by exerting pressure on Russia.

Where does your true strength come from? Our strength does not come from our circumstances, our abilities, or our own determination. It comes from Christ. There will be seasons when we feel capable and confident, and others when we feel weak, tired, or overwhelmed. Scripture reminds us that weakness is not the end of the story. It can become the very place where we learn to depend more fully on God. Paul writes, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). This does not mean Christ promises to make every task easy. It means that whatever God calls us to endure or accomplish, we do not face it alone. Jesus tells His disciples, “apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Real spiritual strength begins with dependence. We remain close to Christ through prayer, Scripture, obedience, and trust, and He supplies what we lack. Even suffering can teach us this truth. Paul learned that Christ’s grace was sufficient for him and that God’s “power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Instead of being ashamed of our limitations, we can bring them to Christ. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us that those who wait for the Lord “shall renew their strength.” The Christian life is not about proving how strong we are. It is about learning where true strength is found: in Christ, who sustains us, strengthens us, and remains faithful through every trial.

Too many players guard the ball passive. We need our players to impact and disrupt the ball - No Comfy QBs. Here’s our 3-part progression: #1. 12 Seconds of Hell A continuous 4sec–4sec–4sec rep to teach layered ball pressure: 4 sec of ball tracing: hand above the ball (not across body), pressure passers, pop back on rips. 4 sec of live dribble: small space containment, stunt and recover. 4 sec of dead ball pressure: vocal pressure “DEAD DEAD DEAD,” limit vision, force back foot passes. #2. Man in the Middle A simple drill that goes back to childhood. 2 passers, 15 ft apart. No overhead passes. Defender must slap the ball to start each on-ball rep. If they force a deflection, errant pass, or movement from the receiver → passer is in the middle on defense. #3. Fake Game 1v1 with only 1 or 0 dribbles. Forces defenders to pressure and disrupt without getting blown by. If they sag too much, they give space for an easier shot or downhill free dribble. If they pressure, they learn to force wide and force tough shots. We call it HEAT. Every defender's heat is different, but everyone needs to impact the ball in some way. No spectators or statues on the ball waiting to be attacked.

We built high-throughput materials labs in Menlo Park to create a loop between experiments and models. The labs generate fresh data, the models learn from it, and then help us decide what to try next. Using only 1,300 H200s, plus months of our experimental data, we mid-trained and RL’d an open-source model to surpass GPT-6 Astra on our analysis benchmark. We call it Neon. This is real footage from our lab. We’re focusing first on hard problems in materials science, including superconductors, magnets, and semiconductor materials. Read our blog posts below.

True, even a two DOF system can exhibit chaotic behavior, and a single cell is an at least an ~10^7 DOF system (i.e., protein molecules per cell). I still fail to properly convey to others the insane complexity I see in our microscopes, and why successes like AlphaFold only work because of the huge number of unnatural constraints placed on the training data. Case in point (below): lysosome dynamics over 12 min across a 200 x 70 um region in the head of a developing zebrafish embryo, color-coded by depth -- just one of 20k proteins at work. Our Cell Observatory Initiative is more important than ever, but while we have petabytes of the most mind-blowing data ever, we are still hamstrung by insufficient AI talent and compute -- two resources in great demand everywhere. If anyone can help us over this hurdle, we'd be eternally grateful.

Hi Abbie! Here’s some clarification… Our concerns: 1. Immigration puts pressure on housing, specifically the rental market, and contributes to housing stress. 2. Immigration puts pressure on wage growth, specifically lower skilled and already low paying jobs. 3. Immigration with no anti-ethnic clustering policies result in reduced social cohesion and the degradation of our culture. To summarise, cost of living pressure from mass immigration is very real and in addition to that we are concerned about the real time loss of the what once was a potent Australian identity. Solutions / Demands: 1. Reduce temporary visa holders by atleast 1 million. 2. Link immigration to a national housing affordability index. 3. Implement social integration policies for new arrivals along with anti-ethnic clustering policies. Immigrants aren’t the problem, our immigration program is! Hope that helps Ms Chatfield! A recent commenter complained (extensively, at great length over many comments) about how a crew can frame a 2000 square foot house in a day and a half, that taking time to do line rule/timber framing is a waste of time and resources, and that he literally cannot get excited about building a house. Sad, but not surprising. It's pretty obvious that houses today are framed by guys who don't like their jobs and want to get it done as quickly as possible. Since we don't hate what we do and take pride in our work, we're happy to go more slowly to make something that lasts. Who's with us?

I had a good meeting with the President of the European Commission, Ursula Ursula von der Leyen. We discussed steps that will help protect the lives of Ukrainians, restore security, and bring us closer to an unconditional ceasefire. We also talked about strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and the EU, particularly through the ReArm Europe initiative. Special attention was given to the preparation of the EU's 17th sanctions package.
