A historic chapter in Mumbai’s underground connectivity. TBM-2 ‘Arjuna’ has launched from the Thane side to begin excavation of the second tunnel of the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, taking India’s longest and deepest urban road tunnel project another major step forward. Arjuna, the country’s largest single-shield hard-rock TBM for an urban tunnel, will work alongside TBM-1 ‘Nayak’, which is already progressing with excavation of the first tunnel. From Coastline to Connectivity, Shaping Mumbai’s Landscape Inspected the ongoing work of the 'Mumbai Coastal Road Project North' today, reshaping a faster, greener and better-connected city. Designed to provide seamless connectivity from Nariman Point and Marine Drive to the western suburbs, Bhayandar, Thane, and beyond, this landmark project aims to reduce traffic congestion, travel time, and pollution. This corridor will also be extended up to Virar and the Vadhavan Port, Palghar in the future. Travel time from Versova to Dahisar is expected to reduce from 120–140 minutes to just 15–20 minutes. Additionally, an elevated connector from the coastal road to the upcoming Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) will further strengthen Mumbai's transport network. The Mumbai Coastal Road North (MCRN) Extension from Versova to Bhayandar features innovative engineering elements, including double elevated roads, roads on stilts in mangrove areas, 2 cable-stayed bridges, 4 basket-type bridges, twin underground tunnels, and 10 interchanges. Spread across seven packages A, B, C, D, E, F, and DBLR, the project covers 26.32 km of main road and 32.94 km of interchanges, connectors, and ramps. A huge mobility leap for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. India’s largest and longest urban road tunnel, the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, has just crossed a historic milestone. MMRDA has successfully completed the Thane-side portal excavation and lowered the 13.34-metre single-shield Tunnel Boring Machine cutterhead, the largest ever deployed in India for an urban infrastructure project. This milestone signals the start of the actual tunnelling phase of this pathbreaking project. The 11.8-kilometre underground twin tunnel will seamlessly connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, cutting travel time from 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes, and redefining how lakhs of Mumbaikars move. Mumbai Moves Forward! The final link of the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road is now open, completing the integrated 10.30-km SCLR network between the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway. The 1.40-km Bharat Nagar Road (University Area)–Vakola Junction Elevated Corridor, built under SCLR Extension Phase II, marks the final and critical link in a network developed progressively since the original SCLR opened. With the Phase I extensions and the completion of Phase II, the SCLR network now provides end-to-end signal-free east–west connectivity across: EEH → Chembur → Tilak Nagar → Kapadia Nagar → Kurla → Kalina → BKC → Mumbai University → Vakola → WEH The newly opened elevated corridor establishes seamless two-way connectivity between BKC and the WEH. MMRDA has achieved a major construction milestone on the 13.9-km Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension (EFE), with the successful erection of the two Main Trusses of its Segment Launcher, each 59 metres long and weighing 160 tonnes, on the busy Eastern Express Highway. The entire complex operation was completed within a record 4-hour window, with the actual erection of both trusses taking just 1 hour. The operation was executed through meticulous planning, stringent safety measures and seamless coordination between MMRDA and the Mumbai Traffic Police. So, what happens next? With the Main Trusses now in place, the Segment Launcher will begin erecting 1,632 precast segments, each weighing approximately 90 MT, span by span. Mahalaxmi to Get India's First Travellator-Equipped Skywalk Linking Monorail, Metro 3 and Suburban Railway MMRDA has completed approximately 90% of the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project, a landmark initiative that will seamlessly connect Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail Station, Metro Line 3 and Mahalaxmi Suburban Railway Station through India's first travellator-equipped skywalk, making travel across Mumbai faster, safer and more convenient. Once operational, the integrated interchange will reduce transfer time by approximately 20 minutes, improve access to the Mumbai Monorail from South Mumbai and Worli, and encourage greater use of public transport through seamless multimodal connectivity. Project Highlights: • Approximately 283-metre-long integrated pedestrian bridge • 11-metre-wide structure for smooth passenger movement • Six travellators with a combined length of 176 metres • Two passenger lifts for universal accessibility • Capacity to accommodate approximately 4,500 passengers every hour Built in one of Mumbai's most utility-congested corridors, the project reflects MMRDA's engineering expertise. A 1,800 mm diameter storm water drain was safely relocated before foundation works began, while adjacent water supply and sewer pipelines remained undisturbed, ensuring uninterrupted civic services throughout construction. The project was also executed without felling a single tree, with traffic managed in close coordination with the Traffic Police and the annual Ganesh Visarjan processions along Sane Guruji Marg continuing without disruption. Honouring the Enduring Legacy of Sahityaratna Lokshahir AnnaBhau Sathe Glad to be present at the bhoomipujan and stone plaque unveiling of the 'Sahityaratna Lokshahir Anna Bhau Sathe Research and Training Institute' being developed by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority, Brihanmumbai, along with DCM Eknath Shinde ji. The construction of a grand memorial for Sahityaratna Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe gained momentum in 2024. The project was entrusted to the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), with a commitment to ensuring the proper rehabilitation of every resident. We are determined to complete the memorial by 2029 and it will be inaugurated by Hon PM Narendra Modi Ji. Lokshahir Anna Bhau Sathe made extraordinary contributions to India's freedom struggle, the Goa Liberation Movement and the Sanyukta Maharashtra Movement. Through his literature, he gave voice to the marginalised and working class, inspiring generations with his courage, conviction and commitment to social justice. His literary legacy transcended borders, earning global recognition, including the installation of his statue in Russia. The Research and Training Institute being established as part of this memorial will empower the youth of the community and help them become active participants in Maharashtra's development journey. Honouring the Enduring Legacy of Sahityaratna Lokshahir AnnaBhau Sathe Glad to be present at the bhoomipujan and stone plaque unveiling of the 'Sahityaratna Lokshahir Anna Bhau Sathe Research and Training Institute' being developed by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority, Brihanmumbai, along with DCM Eknath Shinde ji. The construction of a grand memorial for Sahityaratna Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe gained momentum in 2024. The project was entrusted to the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), with a commitment to ensuring the proper rehabilitation of every resident. We are determined to complete the memorial by 2029 and it will be inaugurated by Hon PM Narendra Modi Ji. Lokshahir Anna Bhau Sathe made extraordinary contributions to India's freedom struggle, the Goa Liberation Movement and the Sanyukta Maharashtra Movement. Through his literature, he gave voice to the marginalised and working class, inspiring generations with his courage, conviction and commitment to social justice. His literary legacy transcended borders, earning global recognition, including the installation of his statue in Russia. The Research and Training Institute being established as part of this memorial will empower the youth of the community and help them become active participants in Maharashtra's development journey. The work on the grand memorial of Adya Krantiguru Krantiveer Lahuji Vastad Salve in Pune is progressing steadily, with nearly 65% of the project already completed and we remain committed to completing it at the earliest. The Kasheli Depot, the operational backbone of Mumbai Metro Line 5, is steadily taking shape with 23% overall physical progress achieved as of June 2026. Spread across approximately 27 hectares near Kasheli Toll Plaza, the depot is being developed to support the long-term operations, maintenance and stabling requirements of the 32 km Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan–Ulhasnagar Metro corridor. Designed to accommodate around 30 trainsets, the facility will include inspection bays, workshop lines, a test track, a Depot Control Centre, administrative facilities, staff quarters, utility infrastructure and advanced maintenance systems. Given the site's challenging marine clay conditions, #MMRDA has adopted advanced ground improvement techniques in consultation with #IITBombay to ensure long-term structural stability. At the same time, temporary inspection, testing and commissioning facilities are being developed to support the phased rollout and early operational readiness of #MumbaiMetro Line 5. As construction progresses, the Kasheli Depot is set to become the technical and operational hub that will power safe, reliable and efficient metro services across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, along with Addl. MC - 1, Vikram Kumar, IAS, conducted a site inspection at the BKC-Vakola connector of Phase 2 of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. He reviewed the ongoing works and gave instructions to contractors, agencies and concerned officials to expedite the work and also maintain safety and quality of construction. The SCLR Phase 2 is nearing completion with 98% physical work already completed. This is the final phase of the SCLR project. The SCLR corridor, with its multiple arms, elevated sections and critical interchanges, now stands at the threshold of full operationalisation, marking the transition from piecemeal connectivity to a fully integrated urban mobility system. 🏗️ A major engineering milestone for Mumbai Metro Line 2B! MMRDA has successfully lifted and installed the first 70-tonne back-span pier segment of the Bandra Railway Over Bridge, marking the start of steel superstructure work on one of Mumbai’s most challenging cable-stayed bridges. The 200-metre bridge is being built across the Western Express Highway and Western Railway corridor near Bandra Railway Station — one of Mumbai’s busiest and most complex transport environments. The cable-stayed structure comprises: 🔹 A 104-metre main span, supported by back spans of 43 metres and 53 metres 🔹 49 composite steel segments, including 24 across the back spans and 25 across the main span 🔹 Two 20.1-metre-high pylons, with four of six casting lifts already completed at both locations 🔹 The entire substructure completed, including foundations and piers With the first 70-tonne segment successfully installed, work can now move ahead on the next stage of the steel superstructure. What makes this feat even more significant is where it is being built: across a live railway corridor and one of Mumbai’s busiest highways, with rail and road traffic continuing uninterrupted. A big thank you to the engineers, workers and teams on the ground whose planning, precision and commitment to safety have made this possible. 🙌 This milestone takes Metro Line 2B, Mumbai’s vital East–West connector from DN Nagar to Maharashtra Nagar–Mandale, another step closer to completion.
