In Ninja Gaiden (released 1991 for the Atari Lynx), Atari didn't port the famous NES platformer; they ported the original 1988 arcade beat 'em up. Instead of precise platforming and "Ninja Magic," you're wandering through the streets of America, triple-flipping off telephone poles and neck-snapping thugs in hockey masks.

R.C. Pro-Am is an isometric racing game developed by Rare and released by Nintendo for the NES in 1988. It's highly regarded as one of the best and most addictive racing games on the platform. Inspired subsequent games such as Super Off Road and Rock n' Roll Racing. Re-released on the Rare Replay compilation for the Xbox One (2015) and on the Switch via the Nintendo Classics service (2024).

Shadow of the Ninja Reborn is a good remake of the classic NES game by Natsume. If you’re in the mood for an old‑school action platformer with gorgeous pixel art and a fantastic OST, it’s definitely worth a look! Now 40% off on Nintendo eShop.

Zelda II released for Famicom January 14, 1987 (yes, I’m a few days late!). I honestly love this game and thought it would be fun to cover 10 ways the NES release is different from Famicom! 1. The NES version rewrites the intro, removes the second “n” from Ganon’s and reference to “another” sleeping Zelda, and refers to palaces rather than sanctuaries. 2. NES introduces an ominous red game over screen, removes the second “” from Ganon and incorporates his taunting laugh, which is reused from Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!! (Released September 18, 1987, while the NES version released Dec. 1, 1988). 3. Link’s sprite has a visible mouth in the NES version absent in Famicom’s. 4. Additional Pillars are added to Zelda’s North Palace chamber for NES. 5. Roaming monsters are more distinct in the NES version. 6. Link’s NES raft sprite in faces right while Famicom’s is forward. 7. Famicom used fewer brick palates for Palaces, with NES including more colors. 8. The 4the boss, Carock at Maze Island, only faces forward for Famicom but can face left or right for NES. 9. The 5th Palace boss for Famicom pits players against a stronger version Helmethead reused from the 2nd Palace, while the NES introduces a new boss, Gooma. 10. The River devil appears as an oni (devil) rather than a spider like creature. This is not exhaustive and I’d love to cover more at a later date! Thank you for watching as I try something new!

History of The Goonies (Konami / 1986) The Goonies (グーニーズ) is a side-scrolling platformer developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo Famicom (NES) It’s based on the 1985 adventure film The Goonies, released shortly after the movie in Japan on February 21, 1986 It was never officially released on the standard NES cartridge in North America or Europe (unlike its sequel), though it appeared in arcades there as “Vs. The Goonies” with added two-player competitive elements. A Famicom Disk System version followed in 1988 It’s short but replayable, with a chiptune version of Cyndi Lauper’s “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” as the main theme

When Nintendo released the NES in 1986 in the US, the market was still suffering from the video game crash of the early 80's. Due to low quality control and shovelware titles, the video game market was cooked. Nintendo wanted to change this stigma. Their system was not a video game console, it was an entire 'entertainment system.' The console was redesigned to work like a VCR, moving from a top loader to a front insertion slot, like a VCR. Accessories were also included - such as Rob the Robot - an add on that claimed hours of fun. Rob was a gimmick to sell consoles and Nintendo knew robots would sell the system - and it worked. If you ever played with Rob, you know just how horrid it was. 😫

Phil says there’s no scenario where Xbox can ever catchup and overtake PlayStation or Nintendo so they had to go off an do their own thing which is GamePass and Cloud Services. Console War is officially over. He also states they can never make the games that Nintendo and Sony do.

The best part of Bronn and Podrick reuniting at Riverrun is that they picked up exactly where they left off—as if years had never passed.

It's been confirmed that the #NES prototype of Aladdin that we added to the site last week was in fact an unreleased NTSC edition of the game, which is a lovely surprise and we hadn't realized that only a PAL edition had been released.

Super Mario Bros. 3 released 35 years ago in the United States. Not only does the entire development team still work at Nintendo, many of them worked on Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Having so much experience is one of Nintendo's greatest strengths.

I'm still kind of blown away by everything they did on the NES in Super Mario Bros. 3. The Tower in World 5 is such a cool design. You slowly climb up and up, in and out of the tower. Eventually you exit through the pipe and this entire cloud world is here to see. #RetroGaming

Before Google. Before YouTube walkthroughs. Before Reddit threads... You called Nintendo. A real human picked up, and told you where to go and what to do. That's it. That was the tech support. That was the entire internet. Those were the days. What game did you actually call about?

Nintendo are like China, they play the long game. As far back as 2013, Nintendo realised that their fans were aging out so they began an initiative to capture youth, one of those initiatives was making movies and only now are you seeing it come to pass, this is how far they plan in advance.
