INXS remains one of the best rock bands to have ever existed & they are completely underrated. The musicality was genius

November 22, 1997. Michael Hutchence found dead in a Sydney hotel room. 37 years old. Hanging. Ruled suicide. The coroner said autoerotic asphyxiation couldn't be ruled out. His girlfriend Paula Yates insisted it was an accident. She died three years later. Heroin overdose. 41 years old. Their daughter Tiger Lily was 16 months old when Michael died. Raised by Bob Geldof after Paula died. Wembley 1991. 'Never Tear Us Apart.' Peak INXS. That performance - Michael owns the stage. No backing track. Band tight as a drum. Voice crystal clear. INXS in 1991 was massive. 'Kick' (1987) had made them global. 'Need You Tonight.' 'New Sensation.' 'Devil Inside.' Arena rock with sex appeal. Michael Hutchence was the frontman every band wanted. Then the decline started. 1992: Michael got into a fight in Copenhagen. Taxi driver. Serious head injury. Lost sense of smell and taste. Severe depression followed. The injury changed him. Made him reckless. Self-destructive. By 1997: relationship with Paula Yates was chaos. Legal battles with Bob Geldof over custody. Band tensions. Financial problems. November 22, 1997. Ritz-Carlton Sydney. Belt around a door. Gone. INXS tried to continue. New singers. Tours. Nobody cared. You can't replace a frontman like that. Wembley 1991 - that's Michael Hutchence at full power. Voice perfect. Stage presence untouchable. Six years later: dead in a hotel room. 'Never Tear Us Apart' became his eulogy. The irony: death tore everything apart. INXS without Michael was just a cover band of themselves. 37 years old. Peak of his powers. Gone. Rock and roll doesn't care how talented you are. It only cares how long you survive.

An incredible singer/showman and an even better band. So sad.

I personally prefer this song: Nearly three decades after the sudden demise of its leading performer, I remained a fan of this Australian rock band.

I remember that day so well. Horrible news. Saw them in a small pub at the beginning of their career. He had already had rockstar charisma.

Partied with him in the late 80’s at a famous nightclub here on Maui! I was the DJ! The band trashed the hotel room, as rock stars generally did and nearly got my buddy fired from his job as Front Desk Manager!

I’d seen them just a few months before he killed himself. It was truly the best show I’d seen them do. (Seen them twice before) The band was really tight and Michael was in top form. Just all so very sad and needless.

I was fortunate enough to seem them in 1985 here in Dallas (way before they would play at Wembley!). I still remember the late JJ Jackson on MTV introducing an INXS video always talking about Hutchence’s “serpentine moves”!

Possibly the best concert film ever made. Incredible from start to finish.

INXS is definitely not talked about enough. Nobody sounded like them and still to this day, nobody does. one of a kind with dozens of bangers.

I saw them open for the Go-gos. Both bands were epic. But INXS was really special.

LOVED these guys. Dig deep into their albums. Beyond the “hits”. SO many great songs. It’s tragic that he took his own life, and also tragic there was a false rumor about his cause of death.
