I am on an early train from London to Grimsby for a morning meeting. I have been contacted by residents who I supported when I was an MP, regarding a battery storage fascility at Heath Common. They have asked me again for my support. I am fighting against these BESS facilities in Lincolnshire, there have been three incidents this year where they have set on fire. There are major safety concerns with battery storage. I am standing against this in Lincolnshire, and I urge the council in Wakefield to also listen to residents and reject these proposals. Safety first is paramount across our country.

2 firefighters were injured last week in Germany, and a motorway closed for several hours following a fire at a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) facility. The fire continued for around 10 hours, forcing the closure of the nearby A31 motorway due to heavy fire gasses (smoke), and also impacted many local residents. Unfortunately early reports indicate the injuries may have been preventable and were caused when firefighters opened the door to the BESS, remember when we see what we believe to be fire gasses at these facilities, there’s a high likelihood it’s actually a vapour cloud, the vapour cloud will be highly toxic, highly flammable and also highly explosive. Opening doors on these facilities not only exposes us to significant heat and flames, it also has a high risk of a potential deflagration or vapour cloud ignition/explosion. Recently released dashcam footage of the car park fire in Incheon, South Korea where an Electric Vehicle (Mercedes-Benz EQE) caught fire. The incident hospitalised 23 people and damaged 140 vehicles, it has since came go light that the fire sprinkler system was disabled at the time. This fire started as a single vehicle incident that led to a major incident. The reality is that had the fire sprinkler system been operational, this fire would likely have been contained.

I visited the market and commended the Fire Service for their efforts, but access remains a major challenge. We must prioritise better planning in our markets. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved fire safety. I've directed the Chief of Staff to work with the Ashanti Regional Minister and NADMO to assess losses and provide immediate relief. A major concern is the use of gas cylinders and cooking in markets. These practices are extremely dangerous. Minister Energy Faisal Khokhar, Commissioner, DC and all concerned officials are present on site to oversee the operation. The explosion of the air-conditioning system boiler was severe; however, due to the swift, professional and heroic response of Rescue 1122 and the Fire Brigade, the fire was brought under control with zero casualties. It is reassuring to note that the newly installed fire hydrants were fully functional and freshly implemented SOPs were in place which played a critical role in containing the incident.
