Do you know there are now just around 150 great Indian bustards remaining in the wild. Meanwhile, against the odds, hope is taking shape in the deserts of Jaisalmer. The conservation breeding programme for the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard has now crossed an important milestone, with the captive population reaching 86 birds. Remarkably, recent chicks have been produced through artificial insemination: a major scientific breakthrough in India’s wildlife conservation efforts. From protected breeding enclosures to preparations for future rewilding in the Thar, this is conservation science working against time. And perhaps one of India’s most important species recovery stories unfolding right now. #GreatIndianBustard #Conservation #Jaisalmer #Wildlife #TharDesert #EndangeredSpecies #ConservationSuccess

A day before we begin the rewilding of the Great Indian Bustard in Sam, Desert National Park, Jaisalmer, visited the breeding facility at Ramdevra. I was immensely impressed by the perseverance of our young researchers and scientists, who have pursued this project with passion for years, demonstrating exceptional dedication to the conservation of this iconic species. #IndiaRewildsGIB

#WATCH | Jaisalmer, Rajasthan: Union Minister Bhupender Yadav initiates the release of captive-bred Great Indian Bustards into the wild in Jaisalmer. Union Minister says, "Today, we have reached a major milestone regarding the Great Indian Bustard project. Our scientists have been working tirelessly on this for the past 9 years, specifically to ensure that the birds produced through our conservation breeding program could be raised to a stage where they were ready for rewilding. This was no small undertaking; the project demanded immense patience, extensive research, and a deep understanding of the birds' behavior. After 9 years of dedicated effort, we have arrived at this glorious moment of rewilding them. I also wish to express my gratitude to PM Modi for entrusting us with the Great Indian Bustard project and the responsibility that came with it... Two male birds were released today, and we will continue to look after the remaining birds in the future. For these two males, the priority now is to monitor their behavior and dietary habits, and to ensure they adjust well to the entire ecosystem..."

At 55°C, when life in Rajasthan’s desert was fading, the Indian Army stepped in—not with weapons, but with hope. By reviving age-old ponds buried under sand, they brought water, wildlife, and livelihoods back. From villagers to the endangered Great Indian Bustard, life found a way again. In the harshest conditions, they didn’t just defend borders—they restored life. Do we need more such heroes? Tell us below. #Inspiration #IndianArmy #WaterConservation #Sustainability #PositiveNews [Indian Army Water Restoration, Rajasthan Desert Revival, Great Indian Bustard, Traditional Water Conservation India, Wildlife Conservation Rajasthan, Community Impact Stories]

Great Indian Bustard was one of the forerunners to become National Bird of India but lost the race to Peafowl. Particularly because of apprehension of getting mispronounced. Hardly hundreds to them are left in the wild now. #NaturalHistory

Reviewed the progress of Project Great Indian Bustard (GIB) in the 91st meeting of Standing Committee of National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL) today at CASFoS, Coimbatore. It is heartening to know that second ‘jump start’ attempt executed in Naliya, Gujarat has succeeded and the chick born on 21st of May 2026 has passed the critical stage of ~40 days of survival. Besides this, the total number of chicks born in captivity in Rajasthan at Sam and Ramdevra have reached to 98. The project will soon be entering into rewilding phase for which efforts are on. The team of Wildlife Institute of India and State forest departments of Rajasthan and Gujarat are leaving no stone unturned to make the project successful.
