Richard Tice clashed with a Sky News presenter over his climate comments and she wouldn’t let it go. Credit to him, he stood firm and made some solid points, especially on water shortages. She put it to him: record temperatures, large parts of the country in drought, water shortages,... and the government claiming 2,877 people have died from the heat. Tice’s reply: “Computer modelling that’s been proven to be false.” He went on: “As an island nation, the reality is ten times more people die of extreme cold than extreme heat. As an island nation that’s failed to build a reservoir for 30 years, maybe we should focus on building reservoirs and using desalination plants.” “The idea that we should be short of water is a disgrace of incompetence, mismanagement and negligence by our water companies and by our government that hasn’t invested in infrastructure. Reform will change that.” He’s right. The fact we’re short of water as an island nation surrounded by the stuff is a national scandal. That’s not climate change, that’s just blatant incompetence and negligence. As for the death figures, we know what modelling is like after Covid. Totally unreliable. Essentially guesswork. With climate change it’s always the same script: “This is it. This is the serious one. It’s here to stay.” Then it doesn’t quite materialise, so they just move the goalposts and carry on. Climate change is an existential reality as evidenced by the debilitating El Niño induced current drought spell. As the adage goes, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. In WEDZA we are forthrightly combating the hardships occasioned by the drought by continuously drilling and installing boreholes in our communities. Thankfully upper Wedza is blessed with a good high water table and we are making the most of it. They said it couldn’t be done… We had people doubt us… How can you build a desalination plant in the middle of a genocide - it’s too hard. It’s impossible to source all the parts… Weeeellllllll….. Thanks to you, thanks to the incredible efforts of our team, thanks to the will to be different and make a real difference…WE DID IT!!! The Sameer Project’s water desalination plant in the North is complete. During our pause in distributions and operations we went through testing of the plant and the quality of water produced. And we are ready!! Ready to produce new and more volume of water in the North. We will distribute this water ourselves AND give it out for free to organization who have capacity to deliver it to areas in need. Now we need continues funding to keep it operation: that includes fuel for the generator, maintenance, staffing of the plant - with your help this plant will basically pay for itself after a few months of operating and saved costs. He lives in a bubble disconnected from ordinary people, the reality of wild fires, burning homes, lost homes - five heatwaves in one summer (so far). 1976 was nothing like this. The science is clear, our carbon emissions have driven atmospheric carbon to levels last seen millions of years ago - mass burning of fossil fuels in just 200 hundred years is the cause. This is not normal. It makes sense to reduce those emissions as fast as possible. That’s not arrogance that’s common sense. Celebrating better wine off the back of deadly weather events is arrogance, wrapped up in stupidity - presented as populism. Oh and desalination works in the Middle East because they have access to dirt cheap and abundant fossil fuels in those countries - it’s the most expensive way to make water and guaranteed to send our water bills through the roof - if we had to adopt it at scale.
