How does one “attempt” a world-record high dive? Either you do it and survive, or do it and die. Am I wrong?

I’m always fascinated at how they have the courage and ability to overcome any fear to do it for the very first time. After the first time it’s probably not so bad…but that first time 😱

- Rick Winters was one of the five divers who participated in the World Record High Dive competition at Sea World in San Diego, California, on August 20, 1983. The event was produced by Wide World of Sports and broadcasted live on ABC. ¹² - The competition involved diving from a steel tower with a tiny platform 172 feet (52.4 meters) high, which was equivalent to a 17-story building. The divers had to overcome the fear of height, wind, and speed, as well as the impact of hitting the water at about 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour). ¹² - Rick Winters was the first diver to attempt the world record dive. He performed a forward one and a half somersault with a half twist, which was rated as a degree of difficulty of 2.6. He executed the dive perfectly and landed in the water with minimal splash. He received a score of 9.5 out of 10 from the judges and set a new world record for the highest dive ever made. ¹² - Rick Winters was followed by four other divers who also successfully completed their dives from 172 feet: Rick Charls, Dana Kunze, Bruce Boccia, and Mike Foley. They performed different types of dives with varying degrees of difficulty, such as back dives, reverse dives, and inward dives. They all received high scores from the judges and shared the world record with Winters. ¹² - The sixth diver, Randy Dickison, decided to go even higher and attempted a dive from 174 feet (53 meters). However, he failed to complete his dive and hit the water with his back, causing him severe injuries. He was rushed to the hospital and survived, but he never dived again. ¹² (1) First 172 World Record High Dive - Rick Winters - YouTube. (2) High diving - Wikipedia.
