Ridley Scott confirmed this week that an Alien: Covenant sequel is in the works. According to Scott - who is out promoting his newest film The Dog Stars - he’s still working on the third prequel film which will focus on Michael Fassbender’s android, David. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Scott noted that the third film is moving forward. Scott is 88 years old & still as busy as ever. It’s something I can’t fathom but that I appreciate immensely.

DEVELOPING: Ridley Scott’s latest film The Dog Stars, which hits theaters next Friday, is being met with tremendous praise. The Dog Stars (🌟🌟🌟🌟) is well worth seeing. My full review is included below & I have to reiterate that you should not listen to those who suggest this isn’t a good movie - those people are wrong. Ridley Scott gave us a nuanced, intimate film for the first time in years. I strongly recommend seeing this while it’s in theaters.

The Martian is Ridley Scott’s best film post-Gladiator. Some may argue it’s Black Hawk Down, but The Martian is a definitively better film because of Matt Damon’s performance, who is a brilliant muse for Scott. I still think Scott is capable of directing films of this quality.

Tim Curry, Ridley Scott & Tom Cruise united for what I believe is one of the most overlooked film of the ‘80s: Legend. This movie was so far ahead of its time, it hurts. Curry is unbelievable as the Lord of Darkness & the fact we are losing Curry in the middle of Ridley Scott Week only makes me think about this film more. Studio interference & multiple versions of this film got in the way of its initial release. But now? Time to start giving this film the credit it deserves.

Given that it’s Ridley Scott Week, I think now is as good of a time as any to revisit The Last Duel. Written by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon, I think this is one of Scott’s better films in the last 15 years largely because the writing is so strong. That’s without mentioning that the entire cast is also excellent. I really, really enjoy Damon’s performance here. This film is proof that even in his 80s, Ridley still has his fastball.

Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World has become one of Hollywood’s most consequential films - at least in the last decade or so. I think this had the potential to be an all-time great Ridley film but, as we all know, it was totally derailed by issues related to Kevin Spacey. Ridley shot the entire film with Spacey & early reports were that Spacey delivered an Oscar-caliber performance. In other words, Spacey was the film’s heartbeat. In the wake of news breaking around horrendous allegations against Spacey, Ridley was forced to pivot with nearly no time. That led Ridley to one of my favorite actors in the history of mankind…Christopher Plummer. One door closes & another opens. Plummer, at 88, became the oldest actor ever nominated for an Oscar. All of which is to say that Plummer stepped into this film with as much grace as anyone in the situation could possibly manage - and to do it at nearly 90? Plummer must’ve thought he had seen it all, at least until this point. But while Plummer earned an Oscar nomination, this film suffered from the reshoots & recasting. It’s a tall task for any film to reshoot like this film had to but Ridley tried taking it all in stride. On the eve of a new Ridley Scott film, it’s worth revisiting one of the more interesting chapters in his career.

Ridley Scott is a legend. There’s no other way to put it. You guys know this is Ridley Scott Week but in this week alone, we’ve lost Tim Curry & Dolly Parton, each of whom were 80. With that context, how can you not take a moment to appreciate that at age 88, Ridley Scott is still making films? Not to mention he’s not cutting corners/using AI. The man will be 90 in a matter of months but he’s still fighting for Cinema. Appreciate legends while you can. At least that’s what I’m doing.

Ridley Scott did not win an Oscar for Gladiator. I know it was a competitive field back in 2001, but as time passes, it’s hard to accept that Scott won zero Academy Awards despite the film’s five wins overall. Part of the relevance of this comes from the fact that this year, Scott is receiving an honorary Oscar from the The Academy. I’m happy Ridley’s finally getting his credit but come one…Scott should own a statue just for this film alone.

Black Hawk Down is one of the many crowning achievements of Ridley Scott’s career. We were shown a new trailer for Scott’s upcoming August release The Dog Stars & some of the footage reminded me of the things Scott pulls off in Black Hawk Down. This entire cast is loaded to the gills & it’s some of the best direction of Ridley’s career. Ridley is great when it comes to combat sequences.

A new Ridley Scott film is only months away. Scott’s been mentioned on my timeline more lately because people keep comparing Ridley to Christopher Nolan. I’m not sure I see the comparison? They share some similarities but Ridley feels separate from any other director in my mind.

Black Rain is one of Ridley Scott’s best films & seeing as it’s Ridley Scott Week, I’m going to push this film on my timeline a lot the next few days. The story is brilliantly simple: Michael Douglas and Andy García play NYPD detectives who arrest a Yakuza killer, take him back to Japan, & run into sheer hell. The story is bulletproof & Ridley runs with it in the best way possible. If you need something to get you hyped for Ridley’s next film this Friday, start with Black Rain.
