August means new Ridley Scott. The Dog Stars is Ridley’s next film & drops one month from tomorrow on August 28th. I don’t know if the film will be an Oscar contender or not, but it’s at the top of my Letterboxd watchlist. The thing I adore about Scott is his ability to dive into different genres: science-fiction, swords & sandals, war films- the guy touches a lot of different areas. The Dog Stars doesn’t sound like Scott’s other films, like Kingdom of Heaven for example.

I wrote about this yesterday but it’s worth mentioning again that I truly think The Odyssey is worthy of being mentioned with Gladiator as an all-time epic about a man separated from his family. The Martian is Ridley Scott’s best film post-Gladiator. Some may argue it’s Black Hawk Down, but The Martian is a definitively better film because of Matt Damon’s performance, who is a brilliant muse for Scott. I still think Scott is capable of directing films of this quality.

I love Ridley & while I don’t always enjoy all of his films, he’s fearless & has undeniable courage. A reminder that his 1984 commercial for Apple helped springboard Ridley’s career to new heights. Scott was an established commercial director before turning into a feature filmmaker.
