For those unfamiliar, rigor mortis occurs because the body stops producing ATP (energy), preventing muscles from relaxing and keeping them contracted. Without ATP, calcium seeps into muscle cells, triggering contraction. This process begins about 2-6 hours after death, reaches its peak around 12 hours, and gradually disappears within 24-48 hours. Forensic scientists use this as a crucial clue to estimate the time of death.

I mentioned this in a comment a few weeks ago. The visual explanation is very nice.๐Ÿ‘

So youโ€™re telling me that after I die, I STILL have to deal with stiffness?!

Rigor mortis is the postmortem stiffening of muscles due to biochemical changes that occur after death. It begins within 2 to 6 hours as ATP production ceases, causing myosin-actin cross-bridges in muscle fibers to remain locked. This results in progressive rigidity, first affecting smaller muscles (such as those in the face) before spreading to larger muscle groups. The process peaks around 12 to 24 hours and gradually dissipates over the next 24 to 48 hours as tissue decomposition breaks down the proteins responsible for stiffness. Factors such as temperature, metabolic conditions, and muscle activity before death can influence the onset and duration of rigor mortis.
