RIP Bob Newhart. From the beginning, he had this fresh approach to standup that was more like a one-man sketch. When Bob hosted SNL in 95, Norm MacDonald wrote this sketch for him. Norm had obviously studied those old standup records. Perfect fit.

Bob Newhart was one of my absolute favorite comedians. His dead pan humor was so funny 🤣. I'm sure he's got them rolling with laughter beyond the pearly gates.

Norm had called her out for lying that she was named after the first person to climb Everest… Sir Edmund Hillary. He climbed Everest 6 years before she was born LOL Remember when Norm had been SLAMMING Hillary on SNL Weekend Update for years and here she was right behind him now? The 90’s was The Wild West … nobody would ever have the courage to invite someone like Norm again… he was one of a kind.

Norm Macdonald explaining to Howard Stern how the president of NBC called him to say he was fired because he was just not funny is wild. I would simply go into hiding forever if a network boss told me that. Norm Macdonald: He said he didn't want me to do update. Why? Because uh um he doesn't think I was funny. Bob Saget was a notoriously vulgar comedian. His fatherly Full House role was often an area of conflict for him. While everyone tried to roast Bob Saget with equally vulgar jokes, Norm Macdonald roasted him with clean dad jokes. Very few comedians understood what was happening. Bob Saget got it. Other comedians got it. But the crowd didn't. You never heard that because the TV edit added laughter when there was very little, which took away from the hilarious nature of the awkward room. I'm thankful Comedy Central released this full clip without the fake laughter so we could hear the room and realize just how much of a genius Norm really was.

Norm MacDonald and Phil Hartman doing one of the best long setups for a five second punchline 😂 MacDonald always said Hartman had the best work ethic of any of the cast members during his time at the show, and wrote this joke for Weekend Update when he found out Hartman would return to host in 1996. Frankenstein is easily Top 5 best characters Hartman ever did.

Norm Macdonald did not bomb this segment. He refused it. Gordon Ramsay is trying to cook red mullet in a bag on Late Night. Conan is trying to host. Norm is doing neither. He treats the recipe like a rumor and lets Ramsay swear into the gap. That is the whole joke, and it is also the tell. Ramsay’s entire brand is control. Conan’s job is to keep a bit moving. Norm’s talent was standing still until the format broke. Put those three in one kitchen and the food was never going to survive. This is not a cooking clip. It is a document of what happens when a comedian decides the assignment is optional and two professionals cannot drag him back. Would this still air now, or would they recut it until Norm looks like he is participating?
