Roads today vs. roads from 2,000 years ago

In fairness, old roads didn’t have to deal with millions of very heavy vehicles.

Roads from 2000 years ago wouldn't survive a week in this modern age with the 40-ton trucks and all. Also, no way in hell a horse carriage can even come close to denting modern highways.

Roads from 2000 years ago didn't have 40-ton trucks with 18 wheels running on them full time, day and night. So, yeah, there's that.

Sorry, that's rubbish. The picture above is from a neglected road. Roman roads also had to be maintained. Todays roads can carry trucks of over 40 tons, and it is very comfortable to drive on them . Imagine how "funny" it has been to ride in a horse-drawn car over Roman roads.

There is just something special about the way we built things in the past

I'll agree that most roads today are poorly made and maintained, however, roads 2000 years ago didn't have 40-ton trucks driving over them.

Yes, the Roman roads are better, but the demonstration below begins with an aquaduct, not a road. However, the Romans WERE just as meticulous about their roads as they were about every other type of engineering.
