Raila Odinga joined Eugene Wamalwa unannounced during the requiem mass of Eugene’s sister-in-law, the late Yvonne Wamalwa (widow of former Vice President Wamalwa Kijana), at Consolata Shrine in Westlands, just a few days after Raila had been sworn in as the people’s president at Uhuru Park, Nairobi. In his speech, Raila said that Eugene forgot to say something while he was introducing him: ‘...he forgot to address me as His Excellency.’ Eugene didn’t even know how to introduce him; “I will never forget how witty he was that day,” Wamalwa recalled in another function.
