Robert De Niro has only directed two feature films- A Bronx Tale & here with The Good Sheperd. This film turns 20 this year & it’s an interesting story about one of the CIA’s founding officers, played by Matt Damon. The casting here is exceptional. This is totally worth watching.

Elysium is one of the more interesting films Matt Damon’s ever taken on & it’s actually a project I really enjoy, despite the naysayers. I think this film explores themes of environmentalism with a lot of thought, which had to have motivated Damon to do this. It’s worth watching.

The Paper is a great Robert Duvall film. Directed by Ron Howard, this film tells the story of New York City tabloid newspaper, in which Duvall is the man in charge. The entire cast here is loaded & it’s definitely one of Ron Howard’s better films. We don’t get films like this now

Backdraft is one of my favorite Ron Howard films & I need to know why this film isn’t talked about more. Howard pulls off some great filmmaking here but the casting is this film’s ultimate strength: Robert De Niro, Kurt Russell, Billy Baldwin & the late, great, Donald Sutherland.

Robert Duvall earned an #Oscar nomination for The Apostle & it’s one of the best performances of Duvall’s entire career. I think this entire movie is incredibly underrated because the story here is really simple but really interesting. Duvall does everything right in this film.

Ronin has 2 of the best car chase sequences I’ve ever seen. Robert De Niro has no business being this damn good in this movie- it’s just such a classic De Niro performance. The chase scene here reminds me of The French Connection. This film is tremendous for multiple reasons.

Widows is a damn good film that was totally overlooked by The Academy. I’ve been thinking about this film more lately because it’s one of Robert Duvall’s final films. I love this entire cast. Every actor in this film is excellent. And it’s a great Chicago movie. It deserved more.

The Rainmaker is one of a handful of elite ‘90s films Damon gave us & it’s an awesome collaboration between Damon & Francis Ford Coppola. I love legal thrillers & this is as good as they come.

The Anniversary is one of the most underrated films of 2025. Not enough people saw this film. The story about a liberal family that’s flipped upside down when the son of the family marries a radical conservative. The story is exceptional. The cast- outstanding. See this film.

Drugstore Cowboy is one of the handful of films Matt Damon picked out of the Criterion Collection yesterday (a video I highly, highly recommend). I’m glad Damon put a spotlight on this film because this is an impossibly great movie. I wrote in my review of Drugstore Cowboy just how impactful Matt Dillon’s leading performance is here. There’s an alternative universe where Dillon is the biggest movie star on the planet.

Open Range is so much better than I remembered. I wrote about this earlier this week after just learning about Robert Duvall’s passing, but I just gave this a rewatch today & Duvall & Kevin Costner are perfect casting together. The filmmaking here is exceptional. Duvall thrives.

Heat is my most watched Robert De Niro film ever. It’s also my favorite. Heat finds De Niro in the middle of an insane run halfway through the ‘90s, including the fact he dropped this film 3 weeks after Casino. Imagine seeing Casino & Heat in theaters the same day. Only Bob 🎂.

Robert De Niro & Robert Duvall starred in the 1981 film True Confessions together & if you haven’t seen this yet, I think now’s the time. The two play brothers- De Niro a priest, Duvall a detective. It’s a quality crime thriller that I’m thankful got made. These two are great.
