Paul Sorvino, who played Paulie in Goodfellas, nearly backed out of the film two days before production. The self-described “softie” had spent months agonizing over the role, convinced he didn’t have what it took to play a mafia boss. He explains… “I didn’t think I could do it, because it was not the kind of role that I felt I really had an affinity for. The externals were easy: middle-aged Italian man. The difficulty was in the lethality that I felt I didn’t possess. And so even though I wanted to do it, I was sort of faking when I went to the meeting and giving Martin the impression that I knew exactly what to do with it - when I had no idea what to do with it. But I wanted so much to be in a Scorsese movie. I guess he just figured I was capable of it. It was about two months of preparation to try to get this quality that I knew it called for. I was kind of agonizing over it - I was thinking, “I’m gonna ruin this movie.” I was looking for something to get out of it till two days before we started production. By virtue of constantly searching to find that kind of quality that killers have, I was preparing to go out one night, passed by the mirror to check for spinach in the teeth, and I jumped back. I literally frightened myself. I saw a look in my eyes that frightened me. ‘Who was that?’ I said, ‘That’s Paulie.’ And once I found it, the role became just a duck in water. It just was so easy to do.”

This was my favorite part of #Flex1045xJossGawinConcert 🎙: What is something you've managed to overcome within yourself? 🐻: The first big thing that comes to mind was before the fancon. 🎙: Last year's fancon? 🐻: Yes. I remember talking to Gawin about how I still wasn't confident that I could do it. I already knew that no matter what, I was going to have to get on that stage. But at that time, I felt like I didn't really belong there. Maybe because I came from an acting background. 🐻: I also had a lot of worries. A lot of my friends are artists, like Timethai and P'Pae, who are musicians. They've spent years building up their experience. Even Gawin himself has been playing music since he was a teenager, since he was a kid. 🐻: But for me, I had only recently started trying and learning. A lot of the time, it didn't feel natural. It wasn't something I could just do right away. I had to practice, practice, and practice again and agian. When I first started taking lessons, there were still times when I'd sing off key or dance out of rhythm. So I felt like everything was moving so slowly. I was starting late, after all. 🐻: But as I kept practicing more and more, I gradually became more confident. Still, there was always a small part of me that wondered, because I'd never performed on a big stage before. I didn't know what it would be like. Would I be able to handle the nerves? What if I made a mistake? What would happen then? 🐻: It took time. In the end, my friends and the people close to me helped me realize that it was all just part of the experience. Whatever is going to happen will happen. I feel lucky to have people around me who made me feel comfortable enough to just go for it. 🐻: And we practiced so much that, for some songs, it became second nature to me. That's when I started thinking, Okay, maybe I started later than other people, but if I put in enough practice and give myself enough time, I can do it. 🐻: Then when the day finally came and I actually did it, I really could do it. Even though there were mistakes and it wasn't perfect, I still felt like, Wow, I actually did a good job. And when I got feedback from my friends, the fans, and the seniors who told me they were very surprised that I was able to do this well, I thought, Okay... yeah, it's difficult. But it's not impossible. 🎙: Everything is possible. Anything is possible. Let's give him a round of applause. 👏🏻

🦊 i finished wrapping up first my solo recently and as words from people around me started influencing me, it really stressed me out and it really started swaying my identity as a person…i was really burnt out for 3 months 🦊 i used to be someone that told people everything when i was going through a hard time like “i’m going through a tough time right now” but i don’t know when it started, but i couldn’t get myself to tell people around me anymore 👤 i wonder why? was it out of consideration for them? 🦊 that could be why…and i also felt like i needed to learn how to overcome things myself 🦊 i didn’t say anything to anyone and was going through it myself…then i thought about namjoon hyung so i went to him and asked him a lot of questions and one of the things he said to me was that he hopes i face the things that make me uncomfortable 🦊 i had conflicts with soobin and we had awkward phases but i wanted to erase all of these things one by one and i feel like there were also a lot of things that i had been misunderstanding, coming to think of it now…so i went up to soobin first and said “hey, let’s go get a drink”

I woke up to the realization that this did in fact happen. I keep watching this and every time he turns that puzzle around it keeps being me. I can't find the words, and I've tried, to explain what I experienced in that moment. I was thinking that it sounds like he's describing me, but I was like there's no way that's the case. And then there came a point where my eyes welled up with tears and I started to think that this might really be me. I knew that I didn't apply, I know that I'm described as wholesome, and I knew that I had sent out a tweet, but I was still thinking there's no way that he is paying attention to me. He had big dreams, but the world wasn't cooperating. This is how he turned things around. what "I realized I had nowhere else to fall from this because I just felt like I’d made a lot of bad career decisions and I was washed up early and I just sat there in this temple." It was a good place to sit and think because he didn't know anyone and didn't understand anything. "And I just started writing in a notebook about why my life sucked so badly." This book, a journal he's kept every year that he calls the book of life, allows him to take an accurate accounting of his life and change his mindset through reflection. After writing for hours about how bad his life sucked and all the mistakes he'd made, he focused on one small thing. "I just ended on this one thing: that I smoked cigarettes. I didn’t even smoke smoke. I smoked like one or two a day, a pack a night if I was at a bar on weekends, but I hated it ... I didn’t want to do it, but I kept doing it." He felt like his life was out of control, but this was one thing he could control. "I just was like, if I could do one thing to know that I’m making some positive change in my life, I’m going to quit smoking. So on October 19th, 1994, I did a lifetime quit on cigarettes and then every day for that year after that, that I didn’t smoke, it was something I could feel good about. So I was like, okay, I did something for myself today by not smoking." The wins started to stack. I asked him what he was writing about. What was his process? "At that point, I had no structure or process. I was just writing, and there was so much in me." Was it anger? "It was. I did feel angry and frustrated and I was like, I had all these dreams. I wanted to be an entrepreneur from early on and I was an achiever. I thought I was an achiever, but I was not achieving." Philip Seymour Hoffman on getting sober at 22: In this interview, Hoffman is asked about his decision to stop drinking and using drugs. The interviewer notes he went into rehab early, at 25. Hoffman corrects him. "I got sober. I was 22 years old." When asked whether it was drugs or alcohol, he doesn't hedge: "Yes. All that stuff. Anything I get my hands on. I liked it all." Then the interviewer asks the real question: Why did he decide to stop? His answer comes down to a single word, repeated: "You get panicked. You get panicked. I was 22 and I got panicked for my life." He's careful not to dramatise it. But he explains what that panic was really about. It wasn't abstract. It was the fear that the life he wanted was slipping out of reach: "Whatever I was doing made me worry if I was going to be able to do the things I wanted to do with my life. And I was putting myself in situations and predicaments that were dangerous." What stayed with him, even years later, was the clarity of that moment at 22: "I do remember thinking there's things I want to do, you know, there's things I want to do and I'm not going to do them. Philip Seymour Hoffman on getting sober at 22: In this interview, Hoffman is asked about his decision to stop drinking and using drugs. The interviewer notes he went into rehab early, at 25. Hoffman corrects him. "I got sober. I was 22 years old." When asked whether it was drugs or alcohol, he doesn't hedge: "Yes. All that stuff. Anything I get my hands on. I liked it all." Then the interviewer asks the real question: Why did he decide to stop? His answer comes down to a single word, repeated: "You get panicked. You get panicked. I was 22 and I got panicked for my life." He's careful not to dramatise it. But he explains what that panic was really about. It wasn't abstract. It was the fear that the life he wanted was slipping out of reach: "Whatever I was doing made me worry if I was going to be able to do the things I wanted to do with my life. And I was putting myself in situations and predicaments that were dangerous." What stayed with him, even years later, was the clarity of that moment at 22: "I do remember thinking there's things I want to do, you know, there's things I want to do and I'm not going to do them. If I keep doing this, it's not going to happen."

Kevin Costner said he didn’t want to speak publicly after Whitney Houston died because he felt their relationship was “just a movie.” Kevin Costner: What happened was, it was a thing I didn't want to do. When Whitney passed, the microphone was going around for a, for a week, that everybody getting on TV talking about her. And I'm thinking, "Jesus, the last thing I want to do is get on a radio and talk about her." Uh, after all, it was just a movie really. And, but there was this weird thing that I didn't take into consideration. I think sometimes, maybe you and I can miss what the real momentum is, that we don't really gauge it because we either intellectually dismiss it or we just don't care, but people wanted to hear what I had to say about her, which baffled me. It was a, it was a make-believe relationship we had. And so I avoided it.
