Why do you talk about it so often?” Or, “When you bring up luxury beliefs, it sounds like you're picking on elites—but don’t we all care about status?” And it’s true. As I write in the book, and as research shows, most people want to be respected and held in high regard. That’s basic human nature. But there’s a spectrum. Some care more than others. And what’s interesting is that two separate studies found the same thing: the higher someone is in status, the more they care about it. They found that those who scored highest were most likely to agree with statements like: I’d enjoy being in a position of power. I want people to notice me when I enter a room. That is, there is a purpose, there is a meaning: that is, to make people as well off as possible, to increase flourishing, to increase knowledge and life and health and freedom and safety. And the fact that we live in a cold universe—that is, the laws of physics, the laws of biology, the behavior of viruses and bacteria and parasites and fungi—they don’t care about you. Assuming it’s very safe, who wouldn’t want a robot to watch over your kids, take care of your pets, and help with daily life? There just aren’t enough young people to take care of the old people. Taking care of elderly parents is difficult and expensive. A robot that could care for and protect an elderly parent would be an amazing thing to have. If you had a robot that could take care of your elderly parents, protect them, and be there 24/7, that would be great. That would be a truly life-changing technology for families around the world. I’m very optimistic about the future. I think we’re headed toward a future of amazing abundance — and that’s very cool. We are living in the most interesting time in history. On aging — I haven’t put much time into it yet, but I do think it’s a very solvable problem. When we figure out what causes aging, I think we’ll find it’s incredibly obvious. It’s not subtle.
