When Mel Brooks phoned Cary Elwes to offer him the lead role in "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" (1993), Elwes hung up the phone as he thought Jim Carrey was pranking him by doing a Mel Brooks impression. Brooks phoned him again and said, “Don’t hang up! It’s really me! I want you for Robin Hood. We’ll cast the film together.” Elwes accepted the role immediately. Mel Brooks on one of his favourite scenes in "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" (1993): "Sometime in 1992, a talented young writer by the name of J. D. Shapiro came to me with a wonderful new take on the classic Robin Hood story. He was a pleasure to work with and in no time, we had a script worth making. I stole my Robin Hood once again from Rob Reiner, from whom I had earlier stolen Daphne Zuniga for 'Spaceballs' (1987). In Rob’s magical picture 'The Princess Bride' (1987), I found my perfect Robin Hood: Cary Elwes. He had the look, the voice, and the charm. I thought he could possibly be the next Errol Flynn! After the release of "The Producers" (1967), Mel Brooks got lots of letters from almost every Rabbi in New York condemning the movie [for its depiction of Hitler] & asking him to think twice before making a movie like it again. Brooks wrote back to every single Rabbi explaining, "You can't get on a soap box with Hitler. You've got to ridicule him. You got to bring him down with laughter. There is no way to get even." He wrote to make them understand the real intent behind the "Springtime for Hitler" scene. And he got a few letters back saying, "Maybe you're right, you know? It was OK." (Mel Brooks' interview with Conan O'Brien, 2013 & "Mel Brooks says his only regret as a comedian is the jokes he didn't tell", Terry Gross, 2022)

Mel Brooks directed Spaceballs in 1987 & it’s one of the best satires in Cinema history. Now, 40 years later, Brooks is going to star in a Spaceballs sequel that’s set to drop in April of 2027. The sequel will undoubtedly miss John Candy, but the fact Brooks is returning for the sequel & will be acting again is why I’m excited. That, and Rick Moranis is ending his acting hiatus.
