Ukraine’s First All-Robot Assault Force Just Won Its First Battle | David Axe, Forbes That Ukraine even needs so many unmanned weapons points to a deep manpower shortage. A Ukrainian national guard brigade just orchestrated an all-robot combined-arms operation, mixing crawling and flying drones for an assault on Russian positions in Kharkiv Oblast in northern Russia. “We are talking about dozens of units of robotic and unmanned equipment simultaneously on a small section of the front,” a spokesperson for the 13th National Guard Brigade explained. It was an impressive technological feat—and a worrying sign of weakness on the part of overstretched Ukrainian forces. Unmanned ground vehicles in particular suffer profound limitations, and still can’t fully replace human infantry. That the 13th National Guard Brigade even needed to replace all of the human beings in a ground assault speaks to how few people the brigade has compared to the Russian units it’s fighting. The 13th National Guard Brigade defends a five-mile stretch of the front line around the town of Hlyboke, just south of the Ukraine-Russia border. It’s holding back a force of no fewer than four Russian regiments. That’s no more than 2,000 Ukrainians versus 6,000 or so Russians. The manpower ratio is roughly the same all along the 800-mile front line of Russia’s 34-month wider war on Ukraine. Russian troops still greatly outnumber Ukrainian troops, despite the Russians suffering around twice as many casualties as the Ukrainians since February 2022. The Ukrainian operation involved remote-controlled flying surveillance and minelaying drones, one-way explosive robots on the ground and in the air as well as gun-armed ground ’bots. In what amounted to a smaller-scale proof of concept for the recent combined-arms robot assault, a Ukrainian ground robot cleared a Russian trench in Kursk Oblast in western Russian back in September. Russia has attempted small-scale ground ’bot assaults of its own, but less successfully. The problem, of course, is that while robots are adept at surveilling and attacking, they’re terrible at holding. To hold ground, armies put infantry in trenches. They sit, watch, wait and call for reinforcements when the enemy attacks. It’s tedious, taxing duty that requires constant vigilance. Constant vigilance is difficult when a human operator is remotely observing the battlefield through the sensors of a maintenance-hungry ground robot. Machines break down. And their radio datalinks are highly susceptible to enemy jamming, as the California think-tank RAND discovered when it gamed out a clash between hypothetical U.S. (“Blue”) and Russian (“Red”) army battalions partially equipped with armed ground drones. “Blue’s ability to operate was degraded significantly by Red’s jammers,” RAND concluded. Allen Graves got interviewed by the legend Dan Shulman and Joe Siddall during the Blue Jays game today! Allen really loves Toronto, the city, the people, the Raptors fans. In order to establish himself as an impactful player, Allen says he wants to have more of a presence on the defensive end, getting his speed right, knocking down 3s, developing a consistent jumpshot, make winning plays, doing the dirty work, and being willing to do anything the team needs him to do. Allen is aware of the Raptors’ “project 6’9” (which he calls “the big wing project”), and he really loves it due to the developmental side to it, and he believes that the Raptors will develop him into the player he wants to be. He has huge praise for the development team. While Allen hasn’t met his Raptors teammates yet, he says he received a lot of text messages from them right after the draft, congratulating him and giving him words of encouragement. Elon Musk just weaponized gravity. The entire trucking industry has a physics leak bleeding billions. Musk just sealed it. Most people look at the Tesla Semi and see a cleaner diesel. A truck that swapped a gas tank for a battery. That is a complete misread of the physics. Musk: “Let’s say you’re going over a mountain range. In a diesel truck, you actually don’t capture the energy of height or potential energy.” For a century, freight has fought gravity twice on every mountain. A diesel truck burns thousands of dollars in fuel clawing its way to the peak. It arrives at the summit loaded with enormous gravitational potential energy. And what does it do with that energy? It throws it away as heat. Musk: “You have to actually spend a lot of money on expensive brakes going down the other side so you don’t run out of control.” Diesel burns twice. Fuel going up. Hardware coming down. A century of logistics, and the descent was never anything but a cost to be survived. The Tesla Semi doesn’t survive the descent. It harvests it. Musk: “An electric semi truck is able to recapture the gravitational potential energy and in fact puts the energy back in the pack.” Regenerative braking doesn’t just slow the truck. It converts 80,000 pounds of downhill momentum into raw electricity flowing back into the battery. The mountain stops being an obstacle. It becomes a power plant. Here is the thermodynamic reality the market is missing. Diesel is closed on the descent. There is no version of a combustion engine that turns downhill momentum back into liquid fuel. It is structurally impossible. Electric is open in both directions. The same system that spends energy to climb gets paid on the way down. Whether it's the Taliban, ISIS, Boko Haram, or Al-Shabaab, what they're trying to do is create a mindset which allows them to conquer the world of Islam. Paul Begala: That's critical for Americans to realize. It's not about us. The real fight is not Islam versus the West, it's within Islam. It's between the terrorists and the tolerant.
