Robots are getting smarter, but most still fail the same way. They don’t learn from their own mistakes. A new paper proposes something different: a way for robots to self-improve directly from their failures in the real world. It’s called PLD (Probe, Learn, Distill). The idea: instead of collecting endless human demos, let the robot figure out where it fails, learn how to recover, and then distill that knowledge back into its main model. Understanding the world is not enough, robots need to predict it and act inside it. That's the idea behind NVIDIA Cosmos 3: → Reasoning model understands what's happening from video, images, text, and actions. → World model generates future states of the environment. → Action model generates the actions needed to achieve a goal. Previous systems often stitched these capabilities together using separate models. Cosmos 3 combines them into a single architecture with two components: ▪️ Reasoner Tower Analyzes observations and builds an understanding of objects, motion, interactions, and physical context. ▪️ Generator Tower Uses that understanding to generate future videos and action sequences that obey physical constraints. So Cosmos 3 moves from: Perception → Model A Prediction → Model B Actions → Model C to: Perception + Prediction + Actions → One unified system. VLA-JEPA just dropped in LeRobot 🤖 What makes this model special is that it does not just learn what action to take from a given observation, it also leverages a JEPA world model to learn action-relevant dynamics. During training, the VLA leverages V-JEPA2 by conditioning its predictor. This clever trick adds a world modeling objective to the training, which also allows pretraining on human videos. At inference, the world model is dropped entirely, keeping only a standard VLA architecture: Qwen backbone and action head. The demo here was only fine-tuned on 13 examples, showing great pretraining capability and running in real time on NVIDIA Robotics DGX Spark! The robot’s “eyes” just received a big upgrade. LingBot-Depth 2.0, a depth-completion model with half the depth error just dropped. 12/16 benchmarks topped. Glass, mirrors, and transparent objects are so easy for us humans, but so hard for robots, because they do not behave like ordinary surfaces in a camera pipeline. A robot that misunderstands a balcony window or a table edge, will have a completely false planning inside a false world. Huge implecation. LingBot-Depth 2.0 takes an RGB image plus a broken depth map from a sensor and then outputs a cleaner depth map and a usable 3D point cloud. Numbers on LingBot-Depth 2.0 - Excels on glass, mirrors & transparent objects — where traditional depth cameras fail - Training data: 3M → 150M (50x scale-up) - 12 out of 16 first-place rankings on depth completion benchmarks - RMSE cut in half: 0.132 → 0.062 on the hardest indoor scenes LingBot-Vision trained on boundaries, because object edges carry the geometry robots need. But they are doing something very clever: They load a single model in memory and use different adapters to specialize the model on the fly. Then load a large model 3. Then, we'll fine-tune the model on both datasets I'll use LoRA to fine-tune the model. This process creates two small adapters, each specializing in solving one of the datasets. The base model's original parameters will remain unchanged. From here: 4. We'll generate a list of tasks 5. We'll load the correct adapter to solve each task The large model I'm using needs 346 MB of memory, but I only need to load it once. Each adapter is only 2.7 MB. I only need to load the base model once and pair it with any of the fine-tuned adapters. Minimum memory footprint and I can solve multiple tasks. Hope this helps!

Robots might learn better from video than from language! 📼 Most Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models learn what to do from text, but still struggle with how things move in the real world. That makes them data-hungry and slow to train. mimic video takes a different route. Instead of grounding robot control in text, it grounds it in video, using large pre-trained video models that already capture physical motion and dynamics. The idea is straightforward: let the video model handle “what will happen next,” and let a smaller control model focus only on turning that visual plan into robot actions. The result is big gains in practice. Robots trained this way need 10× less data, converge twice as fast, and perform better on both simulated benchmarks and real bimanual manipulation tasks. A simple idea. Let robots collect the data that current foundation models are missing. A robot that gets better by doing real work in the real world. For two weeks in the Stanford East Asia Library, Scanford scanned shelves, helped librarians, and improved the vision language model it depends on. The idea is very simple: Robots do useful work. They gather the real world data foundation models never see online. They fine tune their own model They go back out stronger A full loop. What they found in deployment: ✅ 2103 shelves scanned with multilingual, faded, occluded book spines ✅ 18.7 hours of librarian time saved ✅ Book ID accuracy jumped from 32.0 percent to 71.8 percent ✅ English OCR improved from 24.8 percent to 46.6 percent ✅ Chinese OCR improved from 30.8 percent to 38.0 percent The most interesting part is the shift. Elon just dropped a MAJOR nugget on how Tesla is going to be training Optimus to do real world tasks. They are building an Optimus Academy, which is a large scale, dedicated real-world training facility to accelerate the development of Optimus. The Academy will deploy thousands of Optimus units, potentially 10,000 to 30,000 robots, in a controlled realistic environment where they perform self-play, experiment with tasks, iterate on behaviors, and continuously generate training data through trial and error. The Tesla bots will also run millions of simulations in Tesla’s high-fidelity physics-accurate engine, allowing Optimus to close the “sim-to-real gap” by using these real-world observations to refine and validate the simulations! “You’re actually highlighting an important limitation and difference from cars. We’ll soon have 10 million cars on the road. It’s hard to duplicate that massive training flywheel. For the robot, what we’re going to need to do is build a lot of robots and put them in kind of an Optimus Academy so they can do self-play in reality. We’re actually building that out. We can have at least 10,000 Optimus robots, maybe 20-30,000, that are doing self-play and testing different tasks. Tesla has quite a good reality generator, a physics-accurate reality generator, that we made for the cars. We’ll do the same thing for the robots. We actually have done that for the robots. So you have a few tens of thousands of humanoid robots doing different tasks. You can do millions of simulated robots in the simulated world. You use the tens of thousands of robots in the real world to close the simulation to reality gap. Close the sim-to-real gap.”
